02 Protege ES HP

What kinda hp can you guys expect to get out of your proteges if you turbo them with intakes and exaust ect. can you get even close to a civic si's ? And also what do you guys run the 1/4 mile in. I know protege's handle better than civic's but i dont think they are even close to as fast =\

NO. I don't really think a turboed Pro can even compare to Jason's Vortech powered Si at clubsi. Isn't he putting down over 325 whp. For the price of a Protege turbo, you can throw on a Vortech with aftercooler. Oh course to get numbers close to Jason's, you would need internal work done, but without, you would still be around 220-230ish whp.

Honestly, it depends on what Si you're talking about. The 99-00 Si coupe, imo, handle a hell of a lot better. I drove a MP3 before I ever decided to sell my Si and it was good, but didn't seem as good. If you're talking about the new hatch "thing", I believe that the Protege's can outhandle those. Why Honda detuned the suspension is still beyond me.

former Si owner

Sup, my 1st post! Woot!
Anyway, I had a 2000 Si and I did love it, but I sold it a year later w/ 20K miles for almost what I paid for it. I then bought an 89 RX-7. Lots of problems, but fun as hell to drive. It was okay after the problems being fixed, but it's going bye-bye tomorrow for a new owner.

I was looking for a new, inexpensive, dependable car and my choices were P5 or Civic 2D EX. Well, I drove the P5 first and liked it and then drove the Civic and felt very uninsprired. The handling was nothing like my old Si, which of course it shouldn't be, but P5 handles as well as my old Si, IMO. I've only had my P5 for about 4 days, but I am loving it. It's slow as hell, but drives very nice. I'm not sure if I will going to heavily mod my P5. I spent almost $4000 modding my Si for what, like 20HP? I think I will mod as things get older. Although, I think I will put in some new Kenwoods in real soon.

Look at the dyno from Flyin Miata for their Turbo'd P5. Useable power all day long.
To say Vortech Civics are slow.... Back it up.... Jason is running 13-13.4 with 330 whp. His problem is traction. He running 13 second 1/4 mile at 110 mph. If that car would hook-up at 2600 lbs + driver weight with 330 whp. DAMN! He should easily be in the low 12 sec range. Not to sound dumb but, has Flyin Miata actually run that P5? Maybe 150 whp and 170 ft/lbs is all a P5 needs to run 12's. I dunno. I have come to realize that these Proteges do not have the capablities to be fast. Well until the aftermarket jumps in anyway.

Ikea_boy, what did you spend $4000 on to only gain 20 hp?

civicsikid asked if a force inducted Protege could compare to a force inducted Civic, I don't think they can. I could be wrong though. I for one didn't buy the Protege for speed. That would have been a very stupid move.

I agree that to say a Vortech Si is slow, is simply ridiculous. My Si, even stock was pretty decent.

As for what I spent $4000 to gain only 20HP… first let me just say I was pretty stupid at the time. Also let me clarify that it was $4000 in total mods, not just performance mods.
Performance mods was only about $1200.
550 for Catback
150 for AEM CAI
400 for headers
I know there were a couple other little things, but that was over a year ago and I forgot.
My point was I spent a lot of money on very for a insignificant gain in HP. If I could relive the past, I would just gone with a Jackson Racing Supercharger and kept everything stock.

I do plan on upgrading my intake and exhaust on my P5, but only when things are starting to deteriorate. I was replacing brand new parts on my Si with new performance parts and barely noticing a difference in HP… well except for the AEM CAI, that simply kicked a$$.

I also didn't buy the Protege for speed. I just wanted a 15,000 car that was a good bang for the buck, yet reliable unlike my RX7… w/ the P5 I think I found it.
