The best thing to do it go get some snap ring pliers. Needle nose might work if they were small enough.

Dude, seriosuly, my friend and ihad some old needlenose plyers and we sharpened them on the sidewalk to make them a little smaller and stuff, but it still worked like crap.
Getting an $8 pair of o-ring pliers will work A HELL of a lot better and they will save you a lot of time dude, trust me on this :P

I have taken this snap ring out without pliers. It's not too hard, but installation is nearly impossible. There are little gaps just behind the ends. You can use a small screwdriver to pry ends out of slot. Then work ring carefully out of slot. I've installed the ring without pliers but really don't recommend it. Get pliers

The snap ring has 2 holes ,these are near the gap in the snap ring . Put the points in the holes of the ring ,squeeze the pliers together ,this will make the ring smaller and easy to just lift out . Do the reverse to put it back together.

I GOT PLIERS. the ring is the big white thing with the little nipples sticking up right, or is there a normal little silver snap ring

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but it's not the retaining ring. Mine was black. Get a pic, or at least a more detailed description.

It's black and above the white one your looking at. It's got 2 small holes at one end.
