I dunno, the shaft of the stock shifter (after you remove the extension) is not high caliber. It's not even solid metal! It's rolled sheet with a sleeve material around it. They might have cut it shorter and then added the extension on the MP3. I'm not certain. Anyone have a photo of the MP3 shifter out of the car?

 

as a point of interest, one of the mazda dealer's here has actually done this to a car. a mod package that includes a full-exhaust, custom intake, eibachs (stcok struts though), and they stopped short of a true-short shift and just lopped the extension off.

it didn't feel bad or anything, i just found it interesting that they did that.

ps. unless someone knows what the aftermarket ones feel like and can tell it's just chopped, it's a bit of a rip-off.
