Primary Cat: High Flow?

Quote: Bell Engineering As of 4-25, BEGI is in the fourth week of development of the MP3/Protege Turbo. No major problems have been encountered, save leaving all emissions equipment in place. While the temptation was enormous to remove the front cat, subjecting ourselves and the end users to the EPA/CARB imposed $1k to $10k fines seemed a bit absurd. Net result: all emissions equipment are in place and functional. Actually, it proved quite easy and will not impede performance, as the flow capability of the front cat is huge.
According to Corky Bell's crew the primary cat is not restrictive at all. In fact its "flow capability" is massive. Does anyone have any theories on this? I remember someone enlarging the inlet and outlets on it and gaining some power. Just a thought.....

I don't think that the problem is that it doesn't have any flow capability. The problem is that it totally prevents the installation of a real long-tube header, which is not an issue with a turbo

It was me that opened up the outlet. The inlet is already massive. Approx. 4 1/2 inches. The catalyst area is very large also. I just got my collector on Friday and the mandrel bends are here already. I'm going to be sourcing the flanges this next week and then I'm building a shorty header. I'll dyno it when it's done to see if it helps any. I hope to have it on the car and dynoed by the end of the month.
