p5 mods in general

how much longer until we see alot more parts for the p5, i got mine last week and i was somewhat disappointed that theres not alot of parts. although i know alot of hte normal protege 2.0l engine mods will work on it, theres still not a whole lot out there. does anyone know of a performance chip or a higher ratio differential that will work on a p5? my friends 1990 bmw 325is has a new differential and he can screech the wheels when he starts in 2nd gear... i wanna be able to do that in my p5 ; )

That's cause of the final drive ratio. That will probably make your fuel economy suffer.

We own Mazdas. It's just a part of life. At least you got yours now instead of a year ago like me. hehe. There's a lot of stuff coming out by the end of the year so just be a little more patient. We have really good products for this car right now but they're expensive.

Full blown coilover suspension and JDM bodykits. Strut tower bars front and rear. Cold air intakes and cams are available, as well as lightweight flywheels and upgraded clutches. You can get underdrive pulleys and cat back exhaust systems. Chip will be out soon. That's about it without voiding your warranty. WE're just waiting for the header to release.

Do you have any info on the chip release and what it will do?

yeah, thats what im really kind of waiting for is the chip. and gas is not an issue, i have a good money system going, i have to pay about $200/month for full coverage insurance and still have about $80 for gas, so i could burn over a tank a week if i wanted to. ; )

The chip won't be released for another month or two. **** if you had access to a Mazda dealership they have all the programs on file and they can just flash your P5 ECU with the MP3 program. That should be good for the 10 horses.

It will also cost crazy money, if you can even get the parts for it (you probably can; the Pro tranny has been around in other cars for a while). Swapping the final drive ratio in a FWD car requires tearing down and rebuilding the entire tranny, which usually requires special tools. It is NOWHERE near as simple as swapping the diff in a typical RWD car, which usually only requires installing a new diff from a junkyard car or installing a new ring-and-pinion (if only we owned Mustangs and could buy a new R&P from Jeg's for $250 and swap it in 2 hours )

Usually, changing the final drive ratio of a FWD car is only easy if there's an alternate tranny available from a junkyard car (or JDM importer), and it will just bolt in with no mods. Honda owners have it lucky. We don't

I've spoken with my local dealer and they can reflash your ECU but they won't. It requires them to upload the information from a MP3 ECU hooked to the dealers computer, which is linked to Mazda's main site, and then it will download the new info into a new ECU. It's meant as a bad ECU replacement tool only and requires that you start with an MP3 ECU program. The reason is due to emissions certification for the cars. They cannot by law alter the programming from stock. That's why the process requires them to uplink with an MP3 ECU connected so they can have a serial number for the car it's being done to.

Thats what I figured-look into the forced induction section-Brett is coming out with a turbo kit but he is talking about selling ECU by themselves including the MP3, but you will have to send him your ECU first-so youll be out of a car for a week or 2. Check this thread for help
