Nice exhaust sound

Its about that time. Ive had on the ms sport axel back for a while now, and while I am very pleased with it I want it to be louder at idle and deeper all around.

If I stand at the front of the car all you can hear is the engine nothing from the exhaust. But if you stand at the back its a nice deep sound just too quite.

HOwever when I do get up to speed that cannon wailes up a storm and everyone turns to look, its not too bad, if it gets much louder I might start having hearing problems.

Im looking for like a nice muscle car like rumble at idle. How would a header effect the exhaust sound?
What I have noticed is that on cold days it gets the really nice rumble but everything in the car shakes, I can live with that. IS there a way to get this effect year round.

HOw about removing or changing the resonator? Diffrent muffler perhaps?

yeah if you remove resonator your exhause note will be louder and deeper. exhaust header will make it sound nice also. Did you just slap on muffler or did you get a larger diameter pipe? Going from 2 inch pipe to 2 and a half pipe makes exhaust sound deeper. If a were you would get a header, remove resonator, and upgrade to larger pipe. But that will be extremely loud and possibly make your ears pop if you are going up a hill or keeping it steady past 3500 rpms. I upgraded to larger pipe (2and half inches) and had magnaflow muffler with 2 and a half inch tip. I tell you, i had people who drive civics ask me how i made it sound so deep. But that **** got so annoying and i switched to flomaster regular muffler, and now its just deep rumble without being extremely loud.... No matter what you do to you exhaust it will never sound as muscle car at idle, dude.....

P.S. glass is crap, dont get it......

If you plan on getting a header, I would advise against removing your second cat and resonator (the first is automatically removed when you do the header) if you want that nice deep sound - if you do, it will sound very raspy and buzzy around 3k rpm. I have an intake and the magnaflow cat-back (planning to get a header this fall) with the cat and resonator still in, and I love the way it sounds; deep and throaty, loud enough without being too loud, and not buzzy at all, and it doesn't drone when you're driving for longer periods of time at higher rpms.

The axel back is abit of piping and the muffler with a 4 in tip. The piping is alot heavier then stock, chrome, and a bit bigger diameter pretty sure its 2 1/4".

As long as everyone can agree that a header will make the car deeper and not just raspier and riceier, I am removing a cat with it. The obx sounds like a good idea and cheap.

I don't know about stock piping on a mazdaspeed, but I put a header and a MAM midpipe on my car with the magnaflow cat back and it sounds like absolute *** now. High pitched, buzzy, raspy, horrible sounding. I'm doing my best to find a high flow cat to weld into the MAM pipe for cheap, but havn't found one yet. I loved the way the mazdaspeed sounded on my car, and I regret taking it off. But oh well. Tell ya what, shoot "Lord Zath" a PM over on MSprotege.com and ask him to send you a sound clip. He has the same setup you're talking about; OBX header, stock piping, resinator, and primary cat, with a Mazdaspeed axle back. I'm sure he'd be happy to give you his opinion.

Yeah it's easy. Just swap a WRX motor and exhaust in.

Doubtable. It's basically the same thing as trying to get a v-8 sound. It's just a totally different type if engine, and the exhaust dynamics change because of that. Plus the WRX's are turbo, and that changes the sound a lot too.

Im pretty sure just going turbo would take care of it. Its such a huge restriction that most turbo cars, with the same exhaust sound the same.

BUt seriosly what if I tuned the a/f so that it rans crazy rich at idle. Im sure that would have to give the car the muscle car sound. The main thing with the v8 sound is the pulse seperation. Im sure a header would take care of that.

The modern day muscle cars have the hollow sound to them a big exhaust diameter would take car of that. BUt I prefer the old school deep full sound.
