A few questions please!

i drive a 1999 1.8L Protege and before i burn a hole in my credit card, i was wondering if someone could answer these questions for me (just wanted to make sure so that i don't get stuck with parts that don't fit either):

1. bronzeoil shifter bushings: do the ones from corksport listed here (http://www.corksport.com/protege/prtint.html) fit my 1999 if i get the pacesetter installed as well?

2. RE: the j-spec camshafts (again), how much should i expect to pay in labour for the install? i was thinking of installing the intake only, and seeing if i could pass local emissions testing and then installing the exhaust camshaft if i passed afterwards. (yeah, i'm dumb )

3. i was just thinking out loud: why are the j-spec camshafts not smog legal? i would think japan would have pretty tough emissions standards for cars?!

i'm just waiting on email replies from corksport and SR motorsports about the cams and shipping policies, but i'm gonna get this stuff done for sure!

thanks for any help and answers.

1. Yes.

2. Installation costs depend on where you are, and who does the work, too hard to estimate. The exhuast cam may not make enough of a difference to be worth the cost, certainly not the added installation cost if you don't do both at the same time.

3. The Jspec cams aren't necessarily illegal. The profile is more aggressive, so it may potentially produce slightly more emissions under certain circumstances. There's no way to be sure if it won't pass other than installing it and getting it tested.

Some remarks
2. Honest mechanic should not charge for more than 2 hours. I never opened cam cover on my PR5, but I don't believe FS engine has camshaft oil sprayers like SR20(Nissan), so that cuts some work.
Trick is that 98 out of 100 mechanics will tell you that timing belt should be removed, which is extra time and $$$$. What me and my buddy did-we jammed
timing chain tensioner with wooden block, zip tied chain to the sproket and attached it with stretch cord to the hood after unbolting center nut. That way timing belt stayed on and it wasn't necessary to remove bottom cover and whatever accesoiries were on the way.
Look for respectable speedshop, explain your concerns and suggestions., they might know that trick. It also very important to torgue cams correctly(our mistake-cams were making some noise, which disappeared after re-torguing them). Get torgue values and bring them to the shop-I am 100% sure they will not have manual for 1999 Protege
3. From probe forums-guys with J-spec intake cam have passed emission testing. Eric is right-"not emission legal" means -"not CARB" certified that's all.

that's really good advise about how to put the cams on. I'll have to file that one away in my little "how to" notes section. thanks for posting this!
