Hello my friends.
I want to use a K&N drop in filter in my Y2K protege 1.6L.
I want to know if the are any risk of get oil (or other) residues in my MAF or other parts of the air intake.
Does this filters really perform it task?

Hello UHZT, and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

if you follow the instructions on how to PROPERLY use one of these air filters....there is NO PROBLEM....they are one of the best air filters you will ever use.

as my signature states, i'm a new protege5 owner. I would like to get few more horsepower from my car but i'm totally clueless when it comes to automobiles.
I would like to know what i can do to my car to add some hp without robbing a bank.
someone at work told me about cold air intakes.
1. roughly how much hp gain can i expect?
2. what do they usually cost any perferred brand?
3. are they easy to install?

also, how much does getting a high performance exhaust system help?? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any intake will give you a nice growl at WOT and better throttle response.

True cold-air intakes (an intake that has a pipe extending down out of the engine bay; in the fenderwell for the Protege) will gain you roughly 3-4hp, sometimes as much as 5-6.hp

If it were me, though, I wouldn't waste $200+ on a cold-air intake when I can get a K&N (or similar) cone filter and just stick it on the MAF for $30. The stock intake tube (from the throttle body to the MAF) isn't much, if any, smaller than most intake tubes (2.25" - 2.5") and isn't very restrictive at all. From what I have heard, POP-style intake (cone-style filter on stock tubing) are somewhat louder than CAIs and offer greater throttle response gain, but less top-end gain.

I just don't see the advantage of a CAI at $200 a pop. I'd much rather save my $130 and buy a short shifter or something that will go to good use.

The two major intake manufacturers are Injen and AEM. Both are $200 - $250 for the true CAI.

Now we get to exhausts.

What getting a high-performance exhaust does is allows the car to 'breathe' better - get rid of exhaust gases faster and more efficiently. The stock exhaust is 2" in diameter before the catalytic converter and 2.25" after it. These are too small for any performance-oriented car, hence why most people get an aftermarket exhaust. 90% of the pre-made exhaust system on the marker for the Protege and Protege5 are 2.5" in diameter, which is the largest you'd want to go unless you have plans for forced-induction (which I doubt you do since you are just now getting into cars and tuning them). Why would 3" be too big, you ask? Well, contrary to what some people may tell you, it is NOT backpressure than you lose too much of. You want to LEAST amount of backpressure possible. It's terminal velocity (?) that you lose. In other words, with a 3" exhaust on a naturally-aspirated vehicle, the exhaust gases don't have enough velocity, or speed, to exit the exhuast system before more exhaust gases are pushed out, eventually backing up your exhaust system (because more compressed air moves faster)and causing a loss of power. I just got back from school and am pretty tired, so just ignore me if I can;t explain it very well right now

I just installed the AEM short ram yesterday on my P5 and it is awesome. Its not like the traditional short rams with the filter sitting in the upper engine bay, the filter is actually routed towards the bottom of the radiator so it does recieve cooler air from under the car. I got it in 10 days, and took me about a hour to install since im not a gear head. The instructions are very simple and give you diagrams and pictures of what each part is so there is no confusion. It was very easy to install and the sound alone is worth the purchase. It seems to pull much harder especially in the higher RPM's and now has great throttle response. To bad you dont live a little bit closer so i could let you see it for yourself since im in Mississippi. Let me know if you got some questions. I plan on posting a thread soon that will have pics of my install....Peace....

don't just put air filter onto maf as you will lose horse power mazda system does not like hot air. built my own cai from 3in alum. mandel bent tube which is 25degrees cooler than putting air filter on maf and 15 degrees cooler than stock.
