1.6 liter air intake

1.6 liter air intake
is a CAI really that much better than a short ram? iknow they only make a CAI for the 1.6liter but i can get a 1.8 short ram to fit on my 1.6 but i want to know which one would give me the best performance and how much better one is than the other..

I don't think the AEM Short Ram intake would fit on the 1.6 engines. The intake manifold is completely different, so fitment would be a problem without some custom work. It'd probably be cheaper to buy the Injen CAI than to custom fabricate the AEM to work.

Here's what the covered/uncovered portion of my air filter looked like after a couple thousand miles.

The 1.8L intakes and 2.0L intakes will NOT work on the 1.6 liter cars...
Our 1.6 liter cars use a much differently shaped MAF sensor, only used on the 1.6 liter here and the 1.5 liters overseas..
On the 1.8 and 2.0 liter, the intakes are multi-piece and separated by the MAF which is kind of a tubelike looking thing, on our car it's a sensor which is fairly small and screws onto the stock airbox and/or intake system..
You can get an injen intake for 1.6liter and cut it up to make it short ram, but you'll have to hope the MAF doesn't go beserk or break.. but your car will probably throw a check engine light (our MAF is picky as hell too!) from not being able to adjust in the velocity in air flow..
Has anyone made a custom intake and not had a CEL pop up?
I've got the Injen and I'm plenty happy with it.. but I do wish it didn't go into the fenderwell as I could care less about "cold air" over convenience and access to the air filter..

I made a custom CAI...never got a CEL....also did the Short Ram first....the CAI was much louder and I have subsequently switched back to the Short Ram little to no differance in power and much more tolerable noise...check out my How-To though...do a search under homemade CAI

i made a custom short ram also, i did the same thing as above with the pvc and cutting the plastic tubing for the maf sensor, i got an engine light poppup =\ it sounds pretty cool tho and i think i have a lil power gain but i dunno if im getting enough air into it because i put it behind me headlight and i dunno if its grabbing air from the bottom

I have a 2000 mazda protege and i was the one who told dafoo21 about the headers from OBX and then showed him pictures of my car and told him about my air intake.. i used AEM short ram for 1.8L on my 1.6L and it works just fine.. i havent had any problems yet
