What the heck does the VICS do on my 1.8 DOHC do? In my Haynes manual it talks about how to replace and check but what is it's function?

Variable
Intake
Control
System...
shutter valve actuator

It sounds like something that Marvin the the Martian would say (a sign of the kid in me)

OK!? umm.. kinda left me in the same place. What I understood is that it controls sparks according to the rpms. Is that right?

Second, if it weren't working could it cause rough idle or fluctuation in the idle?

Last, any idea of the cost?
