Timing Advancement

Im in the dark on this one. What does advancing your timing do? If its done will it help or hurt you?

well If I'm right It allows more open intake valve time allowing more fuel/air mix per piston.I might be wrong though.

how it works is, when the timing is at its default setting which in your case is 10 degrees the spark goes off like right before the piston is to the top, which in that case doesnt burn all the fuel. when its at 16 degrees, the spark goes off before the piston hits the top which allows it to burn all the fuel while the piston rises and compresses the exlposion and the rest of the mixtures so all the mixture gets burned. hope that made sense...

well its best to get a timing light to make sure your at 16 degrees, or you can just turn the distributor a bit until you feel like your where you wanna be. how to know what degree its at by just turning the distributor i dunno, just gotta guestimate. get a timing light from a place that could show you how to use it. also go to www.escortracing.com, their is a advance timing how to.

I tried this on my 95 1.5 and would check it with a timing light...
However everytime I moved the timing.. the cpu would move it back...
so.. I just said forget it

Don't know about the 2nd-gen, but with the 1st-gen, you have to put a wire between the "ten" and "gnd" plug onthe underhood diagnostic connector (driver's side behind the strut).

Advancing the timing (on the 1st-gen at least) will give a little more low-midrange torque. This takes advantage of the fact that the BP is VERY conservatively tuned, requiring only 86 octane gas. I don't think you could get it to ping with stock timing.

Most of the Miatae owners run 14-18 degrees, with more advance requiring higher octane fuel. The extra performance gained from that extra 4 degrees of timing probably isn't worth the added cost of premium over regular.
