protege and escort engine

ok, me again with the ford vs. mazda thing. im fighting with my friend about the engine in 1st gen pro and escorts gt, lx, any, doesnt matter. so, who the hell produced, made, designed those engines? are that ford engines in 1st gen proteges or mazda engines in escorts?
please help!
