Newbie to Protege's Few Q's

Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum. My name is Daryl
Gregg I have raced and worked on many FWD SE-R'S w/SR20
motors I currently own and race a 98 Sentra and also have help'd
in the building and racing of the worlds fastest Sentra 9.83@148.

I just picked up for what I think was a good deal a 91 Protegé DX
5speed w/175k Miles. No rust or dents just chipping paint. Its a
1 owner car and seems to drive perfect. I got this car for $560

Did I get a good deal? what should I look for as for things to go
wrong. I will be using this just for some commuting now and then
maybe performance later on. As I said I have a car to work on for
speed right now and I wanna learn about protegé's now as well.

I plan on doing a tune up this week using all oem parts.
any sources to buy oem mazda parts online with a discount?

As for the tuneup heres my parts list let me know if im missing anything.

Oil filter & Change ( how many qts do they take )
Distributer Cap
Distributer Roter
Plugs
Wires
Fuel Filter
Trans fluid ( anyone know what weight / how many qts? )

If im missing anything please inform me as I said im new to protegé's
so excuse me if I dont know certain things im learning.

The car was bought from the original owner and has 175K on
the original clutch so I expect that to go eventually but still feels
good. Also he said he replaced the timing belt at 65K and 130K or
so. So i will be changing that too within the next 15K miles.

Are timing belts a pain to do on these cars ( 1.8 SOHC ) I have done
them without problems before on SOHC D-Series civics if there simular
then im sure ill be fine.

Other than the high milage the engine sounds strong and runs good
and the tranny shifted flawlessly.

If theres anything I should look at or im missing please let me know
i would truly apreciate the info and help.

Thanks,

Welcome aboard Daryl. A lot of your questions are answered in a Haynes Manual. Pick one up at Autozone. They work pretty good in getting measurements and fluid levels for the ole gen1 pro.

Gro Harlem & SLPR : Thanks for the help. I have the seatbelt beep and
will be doing the mod to fix it. As for power windows or locks. I
dont have any of those. And I dont have a moonroof. I have been
driving this car for 2 days or so now and it feels and sounds good.
Like I said I will have to do a timing belt soon, hoping its not too
hard and eventually a clutch. At 175K miles if maintained and not
beat on ( this is my beater to commute with ) would you say I can
get a good amount of miles more like 30k or so im hoping I can.
I got the car for $560 so im not complaining. Theres no rust or dents.
Just some paint worn bad on the hood and bumper. Axles are
in good shape. I will begin my tune up next week. And do the
timing belt within 10K miles the guy did it at 65k and 130K so
it should be good to 190K or so.

Thanks Again,

Welcome to the boards

I don't think you'll run into major problems. I drive the same car you do sans the mtx and it's already got over 225000 km on it already. Of course my dad had driven her for the first 185000 and the rest is all mine. We had our timing belt serviced at 105000km and again at 223. Also had to replace my cam and crank seals as well as the valve cover gasket and replace all the crank and alternator(?) belts. Now I have a few rustspots (from parking on the street..no garage through winters) and I have discovered 2 of my shocks are leaking oil and the boots are ripped. I've also dropped in new cv joints and axles for the front at about the 200000km mark. They started clicking and thunking.

Now I've dropped in a kn filter, new oil filter, new ngk plugs and wires and a new cat back exhaust but w/ stock pipes(rust).

Good luck w/ your new car. Hope you enjoy it as much as we all do on this site

Thanks for all the help guys. I think ill enjoy the car and this board.
So far seems alot like the tight group of car buddies I have on
the se-r forum and list where I have been for years. My tune up
parts should be here this week I cant wait to get them. I just
cleaned the car out really good and put about 150 miles on her.

Ill post pics of this $560 beauty this week. I still cant beleive
the deal I got.
