Exclamation I just got a Protege 5; newbie questions

Hello. I just got a yellow 2002 Protege 5. It has 3819 miles and all options ( I think ) and is a 5 speed. It's in perfect condition inside and out. Is 13,000 a good price? Just wondering....

I can spend around 60-80 dollars on A single performance upgrade. What do you all think would be best? Installation will be free for me. Thanks.

welcome to the club. i'm sure sir nuke will be here shortly for the official welcome... but in the mean time, here's the answer to your question:

if your budget is only 60-80 dollars, your best bet would be to get a K&N air filter to replace the stock one. other than that, 60-80 dollars won't get you too far in terms of performance modifications. good luck and have fun. the protege5 is a damn fun car!

Welcome and congrats! Great price, people are buying them up to $20,000 new, and YELLOW! Nice choice, too flashy for me... if I was 10 years younger... anyways... for 60-80 bucks, you can get some ignition wires or get some air intake over ebay. Stickers also add on some horsepower (hehehe, j/k). Enjoy your stay... more people will show up to help you soon!

I got my P5 new (41 miles) back in May for $15,500. $13,000 sounds like a decent price for that kind of mileage.

I spent $17.2k for a loaded '03 P5. $13k sounds like a good price to me.

for 60-80 bucks, i would say go with the intake off ebay. Its easy to install, fits well, makes a cool sound with minimal performance gains. (dont think and intake will give you 15 hp cuz it just wont). But as for wires. I say, and this is just my opinion, get wires the next time you change the oil or something and get spark plugs too. Lets not talk about what spark plugs will doo cuz thats just gonna start WWIII in here. But like wait a while and get the wires n plugs together. i mean the reason i say to get it when you get an oil change is just cuz i think its easier to do it like that since youll be changing your oil anyway and can put on the plugs/wires at the same time. I mean, even if you want a shop to do it, its just easier that way labor $$ too.

Just my .02, dont flame me cuz i got a wierd feelin its coming...

Hello Matt and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

from your description of the condition of the car...you got a great deal.....did you get it from a dealer? or did you buy it from an individual?

I agree with the other guys....60-80 bucks isn't going to get you much if anything....save it.....one thing you are pretty close to with the $80 is a Kartboy shortshifter combo...its $100....and will not only get you a short throw shifter...but the bushings as well....its a good deal and a good upgrade....think about it...

Protege5Lava geeeeez if you had to be at least 10 years younger than you to get a yellow P5.....and I know how old I am ...and I got a yellow P5....GEEEZ DUDE!! YOU MUST BE OLDER THAN DIRT!!!! LOL :{D

I got it from a dealer used, and it's loaded + tint and that sticker.

So here's what I hear so far:

1. Air intake thingy off of eBay. The only ones I found are actually about 40 dollars.

2. Spark wires/plugs.

3. Shortshifter thingy. I don't have a clue what it is or what it does.

I'm only going to spend this much or nothing at all. I had a Turbo 626 before, so this can't compare at all. If I can get something cheap that'll help, I will. Otherwise I'm just going to deal with it. So pick 1, 2, or 3, or suggest something. Thanks!

a keg of good beer!

60-80 bucks won't get you anything worthwhile for your car so you might as well have fun with your $$$

otherwise keep the $80 and save up for some real mods. unless you want some light up water suirters, lightup valve stem caps, and whatever other cheezy crap pepboys, APC, or ebay will sell you for chump change.

congrats on the good deal on the car!

YOU SIR, you are Sir Nuke! I'm just a little man trying to make it in this hard world... I love this forum man! It's like having friends that I've never met before... lets get together, swap cars, i'm loosing it.... 5150... But seriously, man.... I'm gettin thea.... (*cough*, lol), I really love the yellow, but it's something I like to see others drive, I guess it's because it would be getting too much attention, for me. I like a car that gets a lot of attention, but I prefer not to drive it regularly. If I had 2 cars, I guess I would've gone with the yellow P5!

Well yeah, I don't have a clue about anything intricate in the motor. I'm just wondering if there's upgrades I could make decently cheap. Nice gentle wording, haha.

K&N air filter

Yeah, that's what I've heard. I'm up for any kind of an upgrade, even if it doesn't help THAT much. What's the filter going to do, though?
