Evaporative cannister fuel leak

The 'fuel separator', also known as charcoal cannister or evaporative recovery cannister in my 1992 Protoge is leaking fuel after I fill the tank. This is the thing behind the Left Rear tire under a plastic cover right next to and ahead of the filler tube. It is rusted out on my car.

Anyone have same problem? If so, is there a low buck fix other than buying a new one (will be only about $88 for new one from Mazda South). I'd like to just bypass the thing but am worried if I'll have problems with gas fumes or with being unable to fill the tank.

Thanks!

I have ordered one from Mazdarecycling.com. Was kind of hoping there was somthing cheaper to substitute, thats all. I don't want it leaking when I sell the car on ebay.
