Unhappy tranny is gone!

Well i recently lost my gears so i took it to the mazda dealer ship to get it checked. They said it was the differential locking up and I need a new tranny. He told me he could find a tranny from a junkyard + labor = 1200. What do you guys think? This is my second semester in college and money is tight. Do you think that price is a good? How hard would it be to do myself? I think i should buy another car instead but I really love my protege. I sorta need a car fast because school starts this week.I dont want a civic. My mom is pushing me to get a 1992 integera that I havent seen. Intergas are nice but i would rather have a festiva.

The tranny in my old automatic DX went out too and me and my dad went to a junkyard to find a manual one. The transmission, and all the parts we needed with it, cost about $625. That's with installing it ourselves. In your case I would just get a different car though. It's not worth putting $1200 into that car in my opinion.
