KL-ZE Smog?

I've searched... and I see a lot of people asking about KL-ZE possibilities...

but does anybody know if it will pass Smog tests in CA? Any way to get around it?

Also... seeing as how A-spec give you all this

Stuff you get ( all MX-6 / MX-3 items )

Engine itself
Transmission
Drive Shaft
Computer & Harness
Engine Mounts
Sub Frame
Bigger MX-6 Front brakes ( full rear available )
Front MX-6 suspension
Front & ( optional ) Rear Strut bars
Would it be a lot more work to switch from automatic to standard? I know you'll need to find a new center console etc., that really isn't that big of a deal.

To make this more feasable, should I go search for a 5-speed? (And should it be an LX?)

hmmm... hate to reply to my own post... but to pass smog... could you swap out the KL-ZE ECU for KL-03 ECU? Would that work? (???)

i have serious doubts it will pass CA smog. The emissions eqiupment is just not there on a JDM engine and changing the ECU will not help, unless it's a stand alone and you can tweek it every which way to help make it pass.

Ya just gotta know someone............

Thanks guys!! Sorry if I sound like such a n00b....but it's because I am But I am learning a lot reading through the boards, I find this very exciting

All-in-all, the KL-ZE / BPT swaps are a fairly inexpensive way to get a nice little sleeper pro...

Heh,
David from MotorSport got the Firebird (without a cat and has some emissions problems) to pass emissions tests hre in Ohio by flirting with the lady that was checking it. She only put the tester in 1 of his exhaust pipes and didn't even check the car for a cat. You could go that route :-)

You should be able to do a swap as long as the engine is from a newer car than the Protege, and it has all the physical smog equipment from that engine year. You'd need to get the appropriate stickers from the dealer (for, say, an MX-6).

Even with the KL-ZE and computer, it would probably pass smog, as long as you have a fairly new cat. Japanese emission laws are pretty close to federal US laws.

Funny part was I didn't even bring money with me because I figured it would fail. I had to run to the ATM around the way and come back...

Anybody know about WA smog? I don't actually have to own it...

while the forum was down...i did some research. i think a DX Pro 5spd would be a great 'race' car for a KL-ZE swap. find a cheap DX, get the motor for $950 from sun engines, find a jdm lsd tranny, have some strong 'custom' axles made, a standalone to tune it with, and waalah! for ~$4,000 you've got a fun track car - maybe even autox'er
just to spark ideas
