Ignition Timing.....1st Gen

OK, so i advanced my ignition timing as i felt this would help....i did so not really understanding why or how this increases or decreases power. But after thinking about it, it's merely the fact the valves open sooner or later, depending on if you advance or retard the timing.
I know there's more to it, but thats the basics of it....now my question is, how do i set this optimally with my particular set-up? (my mods) and don't say with a timming light Einstein

Is there a way to tell if it's in the right spot or thereabouts? (sound, rpm??) besides using a dyno? Or am i just asking for trouble and take it to a good engine tuner and have them mess with it. I like to think i can do many repairs and fabricate many mods, but there are some things i just don't understand yet and rather than muscle my way through as i have in the past with mixed results, i figuered i'd ask questions first, then shoot

thanks!

thanks Jesse!

Well, for now the track and the seat of my pants will determine it's setting....but after a few more mods, i will get another dyno done.

Is there any tools that one could use to get the "Best" out of advancing one's timing?

I heard about one but 1) I forgot what it's called 2)it probably doesn't work on pros 3) I think it's an old school kinda tool that isn't used on fuel injected vehicles

Would it be easier to do that kinda trick on an SOHC engine? CUZ I need all the power I can get! lol

Ignition Timing

I red on the Miata web page that 14 dregrees BTDC is a good setting for the Miatas. Is it true for the Pro DOHC ? I got mine @ 14 but I want to know if anybody took the time to play with their timming and see how far you can go on the timming before it starts pinging or losing power? ...........I wish I had a dyno in the garage........
