Snow tires?

I like the way the Potenzas work in the dry, but they are downright SCARY in the snow. (a big problem here in MN) Anybody tried Blizzaks or anything?
Also, does anyone know if I can use 14s for a set of snow tires, and save some $$? (I'm thinking cheapo steelies from a junkyard) The '00 and '01 came with 14s, right? So they should clear everything ok.

I'm using 14" Kumho KW-11 I'Zen Studs for my snows, but they'll be off the car soon. Going back to the Poortenzas for the summer in a couple of weeks.

I can't say from personal experience how good they are in snow (we never got any this winter, except for 2 inches that stayed for about half a day). They are VERY quiet for snows, decent in the rain and dry. Consumer Reports gave them top marks, higher than Michelin Arctic Aplins. I think you can't go wrong with these, considering they're also among the best priced snows. Studdable too if there's serious snow/ice where you are.

Thumbs up

Thanks!
No studs allowed in MN, but we get plenty of snow (except this year)

You're welcome! Another one you could consider are the BFG Winter Slaloms. Also very quiet, and supposedly better suited to snow than the Kumhos, whereas the Kumhos are better on ice.

I had a 01' ES2.0 and the stock tires were terrible in the snow last winter. I purchased some 14 inch steel rims with (sympherit???) snow tires from discounttire.com ($425, perfect mounted, balanced. shipped along with insurance). I bought a 03' PR5 in december and they fit this car. We had lots of snow up here in NE this winter and the tires did incredible in the snow. I put almost 6k miles on them and they look like they lost no tread. I drove pretty easy on them though. I purchased them early in the fall and was glad that I did it.

Smile

Thank you, gentlemen; I really appreciate the help. Guess I'll save up over the summer & get hooked up before the snow hits next year. (God, i hate thinking about "next winter" at the end of March... We love summer in Minnesota; it's the best week of the year!)
Thanks again.
