HP Loss?

I remember reading an article a while back talking about how much HP you could loose using a heavier wheel, and a different size. i can remember that the car was a civic, an HB civic at that, and i think they went from stock wheels to 17x7's.

anyway, what i wanted to know is how much HP to you think i would loose going up to 17's in the P5. i think the civic from the article lost about 2-3 hp somewhere throughout the range.

i was really looking at getting 17's for the P5 but i didnt know the stock ones weighed so little in comparison, and i until i had realized we had 5 lugs, i had my wheels picked out, i like those axis 17' maglites, only 14 lbs on 17's, but in 4-lug only applications. kinda f's me over for the P5. so now im looking at some enkei RS5's, 15.8 lbs 5-star pattern 16x7, they look sorta similar to the stock wheel, but are pretty different when you look up close, as in no mazda symbol and dont have the pattern in "spokes" (couldnt think of a better word).

and i did consider that fact that i wanted to auto-x, but thats a ways off, and i really dont want to step down a wheel size.

but anyhoo, nuff of the rant.

-Thanks in advance

oh, and does anyone know of some light weight rims that dont look like ***?

Wheel Weights

Yes, keep the overall wheel-tire weight constant or reduce it, ideally.

I went from the ugly stock steel 13 inch wheels with Michelin MXH4 A/S tires (wheel+tire+hubcap = 30+ lbs) to 15 inch Konig Heliums (under 11lbs) and Falken ZIEX 512 (17 lbs) for a net drop of 8 lbs overall unsprung weight.

Can't say I notice the difference, though, except in appearance and handling (WAY better!)

Also, I'm nobody to question your wheel upgrade, but I don't follow your logic in upgrading from the P5's stock wheels to Enkei RS-5, they are pretty similar, and if you get 16 inch Enkei's - what's the point?

Rota has some nice lightweight wheels in 17 inches, and 17" Konig Heliums are *supposed* to be out shortly.
FYI

I completly agree ashutosm,
i dont like the idea of "upgrading" to whell thats really more similar than not, tothe stock wheel, your only loozing a couple onces, and gaining an inch in width. i mean its pretty lousy really.

i just cant find the wheel weights of some of the other wheels i look at. i like some of the 5zigen's ive seen, and enkei has some cool ones, rh evolutin has nice lookin stuff too, but for the most part i either have to step up in weight, in some cases for the 16's and 17's. but i cant find too much information on how much some of the wheels i like, weigh.

the largest i would go is 17". i think that 18's are just tooo big unless you are running some kind of serious forced induction, or if you have a car bad *** enough to runn em, or if its for show. but thats a different story.

::::::EDIT:::::::

Actually checkk this out, www.wheelspecs.com pretty neat, you can browse wheels and check on their weight, 5zignes and the whole bit, but only if someone has posted the weights and stuff. still pretty helpfull. I guess going up 1 pound or 2 wouldnt hurt you so bad.

I used to have some fairly heavy 17x7 Primax 618 10 spokes, and they tipped the scale just enough that my braking performance was unacceptably bad if I had more than a couple passengers in my car.

Acceleration was noticably worse and fuel economy was noticably worse..

I've now got (until they go on a Jetta next weekend) some Kosei wheels in 16x7".. they are about 8lb less per wheel than the Primaxes they replaced..

Handling feels alot safer with them (steering feels more accurate with less stress on steering components), braking became good again (almost like my stock 14s were), acceleration is fine, and I am back at around 30mpg again (MUCH better than the Primax's).. another benefit of light wheels is if you live in areas with less than perfect roads, suspension also feels alot happier on less than perfect roads because if you go in and out of potholes with heavy wheels you hear ALOT more of a "boom" afterwards.

Velox, Kosei, Rota are a couple brands to look into for reasonably light and inexpensive wheels.

I think that more power is lost..............who cares if it's 3 horses...
one wouldn't even feel the difference............

Lightbulb Wheel Weights

Yup, wheelspecs is a good website.

Also check out wheelweights which has been set up with pdf files of a HUGE number fo wheels this person found info for. Also follow his Links Link on the left for a convenient place to centralize manufacturers' websites.

Rotas will be one of the best price/weight/performance bets around! Some Enkei's would do the trick as well, and the 17" Konig Heliums, if they're available yet!

i felt the hp loss when i "upgraded" to 18 x 7.5 5 zigen inperio M-05 with 2154018 pzero's...my p5 felt really sluggish and had no acceleration at all...i sold those and put my stock ones back one and what a difference, but with my adr's, i dont have any problems with em...
