gauging interest: Stage II cams

This is a feeler thread for those interested in purchaing upgraded PERFORMANCE cams (not the slightly altered j-spec cams) for the 2.0L motor. These will be available in 4 different grinds. Only 2 will be available immediatly the second set will require the purchase of the AEM ecu developed by Wagner Motorsports. Here is the info I have currently (subject to change):

Stage 2 NA, RACE NA, Stage 2 Turbo, RACE Turbo are being made...both RACE cams will require the AEM ecu and will work best with raised compression.

Both camshafts (intake and exhaust)

custom grind designed in-house by Wagner Motorsports but built, tested and inspected by Crower Cams

Actual performance cams not j-spec units that require tuning.

Drop in and go....no can gears needed, but gains be made with further tuning of the cam timing. These cams are designed to work with stock valve train and require no new springs/retainers/anything. The upgraded valve train will be recommended if not required for the RACE cams as the rpm limit of the engine will be raised.

Cores will be needed, it is unclear yet if the j-spec cams will work for cores, but I don't see why they wouldn't.

Pricing will be $475 for both cams. During the GB period ONLY. After that retail prices will apply at $550 per set. Cores will still be required and a core charge will be issued at time of purchase and refunded after cores are received.

A free flowing exhaust and intake will greatly increase the ability of these cams. Header and highflow cats recommended for optimum flow as is a CAI or SRI.

Expect gains of more than 15% for cams alone, 20% with a good intake and exhaust and 30+% with the AEM ecu. While 15% may not seem like a lot it needs to be put into perspective: The j-spec cams can be had for about $300+....they have only shown gains of 3-8whp and that is only a PEAK number, not an overall increase. Also, torque is slightly reduced when switching to the j-spec cams. With JUST the cams on a stock P5 you should see 15whp from 300rpms to 6000rpms. It is a very useable cam profile and only gets beter the more you let your engine breath.

Group Buy starts today and will end on 4-20-04 (tuesday). The cams will be coming to my supplier from Crower Cams in Cali. They will be installed on the 19th and a dyno chart will be posted immediatly after it is available. The estimated gains I quoted earlier are from CROWER themselves and they know a thing or two about cams and what to expect. If anything I would guess these cams will be underrated.

Please copy the list and add your name/info to it as I do. Thanks.

1. Roddimus Prime - Stage 2 NA (paid)
2.
3.
4.
5.

We need a minimum of 5 buyers to qualify for the special GB price. If 5 buyers are not lined up pricing will be at the retail cost of $550.

PM me with any further questions. Please be specific about who you are as I deal with 30+ pm's a day on this forum. Let's keep this thread clean.

oh crap!! CF cams!! I can just hear the broken valves!!

on that note...do you know if we have an interference-style valve train?? I know some cars do and whe the cam belt slips it'll destroy the head. I'm going to look into that.

Quite sure the valve train's non-interference. I'll double check and get back to you.

I'm not sure who to ask about this....maybe one of the second gen guru's or someone with access to a mazda parts catalog who can cross reference cam part numbers to see if they're the same...

If these cams are going to be available for the 1.6 liter also, then maybe I would be interested. Well ok Im lying..... I would be very interested. Its about time I stop focusing on all show and start adding a bit o go! You said that is would increase the amount of HP if cam gears were purchased and tuned right. Anyone have am idea where cam gears can be found? I already talked to someone from Tri-Point Engineering and they only have gears for the 2.0. Plus I saw some gears on www.mmrusa.com for the Mazda, but they are only available for B-series engines. Can someone help me out?

I have heard confirmation that the 2.0L cams WILL work with the 1.8L motors, but I do not know about the 1.6L engine.

Also, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to anything other than 3rd gen proteges. Anyone wanting to purchase the cams would need to do their homework before ordering!
