12" jl question

recently installed my 12" JL W3 in a 1.25 cu ft qlogic box...(the range was between (1-1.5 cu ft). I noticed the sub was a little sloppy so I took it to some of my friends at circuit city and they agreed. Tried to tell me to port it, I ported it, and it was awful. so im back to where i was with the problem of the 12 just slobbering all over my songs. to describe it better...it seems like the sub isnt dropping to change notes very quickly. i have a 5 channel crossfire amp and i am sending it 300 watts...any suggestions? anybody else hae problems like this?

the crossover settings were set at 250hz to try and fix the problem, that has seemed to help some, the gain has also been turned down which has helped some. i know u guys are going to probably give up and all and just say get a 10 if u want the crisp sound but i put inthe Alpine Type-R 10in and it wasn't as crisp as some of my friends cars either...so i'm thinking headunit? what kind of setting should i have to try to clean up the sound...i have a pioneer 7400mp
