What the heck?!!

Ok. First of all I have to let you guys know how bad my tranny is right now. I have an auto tranny, it has a leak, HOLD button blinks ( Yeah, I know is gonna die soon). Anyways, hmm.. today I checked the tranny oil and it needed like one quart, so I bought the oil and put it in. when I took it for a spin it didnt change gears.I was like"What the!"
I stopped, floored it and when the rpm's got to 6(I have a DX so thats where the redline starts) it just kept going though the redline, it didnt change gears. So I let it off the gas cuz I didnt wanna force it. So what's wrong with it? . I know I shouldnt even be asking that, cuz i knoe i need a new one but i have no money right now. Plus, I feel like an idiot driving my car in just one gear.

when my transmission dropped (2 months after i got the car ), it was fully shot when i could only do 45 mph in first gear... and as i was told, the transmission needed a rebuild.. and there is no cheap way around it unless the transmission is a junkyard pull, and even so, pulling the **** out is a bitch. the basic idea was that i had fully destroyed a gear or something along the lines of where my mechanic had to say the words "disentegrated gears". i didn't do neutral drops, but i used to down shift a lot while decelerating (sp). i'd take fair chance that your transmission is shot, but who knows, have a mechanic look at it and see if he can find anything else out. good luck bud, and if worst comes to worse, you can always get a used transmission from the junkyard pulled for under $200 bucks... it's just taking the shot in the dark that it's not destroyed as well.

just a comment ..... when your fluid is on the low line, you add a PINT, not a quart. Also, there are two seperate ranges to read for hot and cold. Be sure you've read the procedure for checking the fluid level in the manual. Just want to be sure you've done it right, else you may have added too much.

damn! thanxs bro. I hope its not that. I've been thinking about getting a tranny from a junkyard but I'll be really lucky if i get one that actually works. So I dun know what to do because that tranny has been rebuilt once. what do you guys suggest?

And if I DID add too much oil, will that make the tranny not shift?

Possibly, but I haven't really found anything that says what the symptoms are if you do, but the fluid will slosh around in the wrong place or something, and can boil that way, I believe. Still don't know if it would cause you to sit there spinning at 6k RPM... Forgive me if I sounded accusatory or anything. Just want to be sure

think about it, for the trouble you go through to convert your automatic to a manual, you can just pull any old 5 speed with a strong clutch and engine, and be done with it, keep your old car and swap whatever you want into the 5 speed if necessary and call it a day. doing the 5 speed conversion is do-able if you've got the tools, eitherwise, i wouldn't waste the money to have somebody do it for you.

It doesn't matter if you put to much oil in an auto tranny the only thing it's going to do is leak oil by the overflow hole on top of the tranny. I work in a tranny shop an when i put the oil in the tranny i use the full hot mark even if it's cold it doesn't really matter. the principe is that oil expands under heat so it will overflow and the client don't like that so we try being on the mark.

Be very carefull when getting a tranny from a junkyard. I did that for my BPT swap into my mx-3 and blew a synchro after a week of driving it. It wasnt smart not to take a look inside of it before I put it in but i guess thats my mechanics fault cuz they actually did it. O well, just a heads up, I hope you get a lot luckier then I did.
