SCCA Protege's

Well after about 8 months of owning my 2000 ES, I have been racing it since February.
I recently raced in the SCCA Solo2 (autocross) Nationals in H-Stock, racing against, Civics, BMW 318's, and Focus'.

For the ProSolo Series (2 races+ the Finale), I finished 2nd in year end Points.
At the actual Championship race (which was cut in half due to the events in NY), I finished 6th place. Not bad considering the limited work I've done, but I wish I could have trophied!!

In the SCCA runoffs a week later (road racing), a Protege took first place in SSC (and another one got 3rd I think).

Anyone else road race or Autocross??!? I was the only 3rd Gen Protege racing at the Solo2 Nationals.

I've been racing autox this year with my 00 ES and have won four race so far this year (i should have won eight but they had my car in E stock, and after they moved me to HS there was a BMW 325es that was wrongly in HS, it should have been GS).

I have Kuhmo victoracer V700. and a K&n drop in. I was just askeed to go to the tri-state invitational championship.

go have a look

P.S. I have been the only Protege there all year. I have let some other poeple drive the car on fun runs and my friends wife raced it a few times. she usually runs a Perlude. every one who has driving it has nothing but good to say about the little Protege.

I would really like to try some autocross with my Protege5, but i have never done any kind of racing before and am not really sure how to get into autocross. I am from toronto and havent been able to find any kind of autocross events anywhere around here. If anyone can give me a tips or any help, that would be great!!

There is a club in Buffalo, NY. I'm not sure how much of a drive that is for you.

Jason, I looked up your time at the nationals. How many runs did you take, three i think you said. there is a lot of Improvement in your times. but still 1.8 behind the leader. Did you fell as if the car or you could go 2 seconds faster. I know that there has been times that I think my car should be a second or 2 faster that what I'm driving it. But then I'm still new at this and every time I go racing I nead to learn something new.
I wish there was some protege's racing where I run then I might find out if it's the car or me. I think its the car.

I did have a friend take the car out on a fun run and he was a secound faster than me that day. He runs a prelude with his wife and she will beat sometimes. In the three races that she ran in my race i beat her every time. she came as close as 5 hundredths.
Thats close.The FInger

I've been autocrossing my '90 LX since it was new.

I've won two NTs (Seattle '99 and San Diego in '00, both in STS). Course, I beat one and two cars, respectively.

My best Pro Solo in the Protege was a 2nd in '00 at Lemoore. I came within a cone (on either day) of beating Steve Wynne (0.146 sec) at the '01 Bremerton NT. I had him scratch by over a sec.

I was planning on going to Kansas this year, but ran short of money. Next year, I plan on being part of the Protege/EGT invasion of STS in Topeka.

I won the Cal Club (L.A. Region SCCA) STS championship in 2000 by 0.31 points (out of 1000). (If I had been 0.031 sec slower at the last race, I would have been 2nd!).

This year, I finally moved back into 1st place at the last race, this time by 1.1 points with 4 races to go, so I'm hoping to repeat again this year.

I'm just guessing, but I think that with the 1st gen Pro classed in HS this year, that there will be a lot more than two competing next year, IMHO.

Sorry, NT=National Tour. I think there are about 7-8 a year before Nationals. You need to either attend a National Tour, or a Divisional, to be eligible to attend the Nationals in Topeka. Or, you can get a waiver, for $90 in addition to your Nats entry fee.

I think the closest one to you might be Meridian, Miss. Last year, it was about two weeks after the Ft. Meyers Pro.

The idea behind the National Tour was to give people a feel for what goes on at Nationals. You usually run the course one direction on Saturday, and the other direction on Sunday. Your time is the combination of your best run each day. Little changes are that each cone is numbered, and downed cones are reported by number. There are plenty of other details, but you get the idea.

Oh, when you win, you get a neat wooden trophy, and your name in "Sports Car." Actually, you get you name with a top 3 finish.

On another note, Is the ProSolo tour just for fun? I thought that might be a way to qualify for Nationals. Just wondering, as im still a novice as to how this whole system works.
You just have to attend (as a participant) either a Tour or a Divisional. If you can't make the Tour, there should be a divisional somewhere near you. You'll have to check neighboring regions to see if there is one near you next year. It's both good practice for the Nationals and fun too. For me, the nearest Tour is/was 2.5 hours away, and the nearest divisional was a 6+ hour drive.

The Pro Solos are different than the Tours. Originally, you could win money just for placing in the top half (my first Pro, and the last year this was true, I won $45 for 9th out of 17 cars in ES). That was back when Valvoline was the title sponsor. The idea was to provide a showcase for the top drivers. Some would make all the events, as they could win enough money at each event to pay their expenses. But they are the most fun you can have autocrossing. I hooked two friends last year who plan on attending more than one next year. The Utah STS gang had such a good time in 2000, that they made all three Western Pros in 2001.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
