First off, i'm new here... been reading the board off and on for a few months. My wife owns a 94 Protege DX and my sister owns a 2002 Protege5.
Alot of posting regarding the Spec-V's have me biting my tongue, mainly due to the lack of knowledge regarding these cars. Some comments are pretty rude, but hey..... everyone has their opinion. Personally, i don't bash other peoples rides.... they all have there good and bad points, but of all the new cars i have owned, my Spec-V puts a smile on my face everytime i put the pedal down.... the torque from this non-turbo'd engine is very sweet.
I have a collection of pictures and a few vids of my dyno session, as well as dyno graphs of my Spec-V and my buddies Spec-V, as well as a timeslip from last summer when i ran a 15.1 at almost 92mph. Not too shabby for stock. The dyno of my car was with a K&N drop-in.
Regarding the dyno numbers people have been stating about the Spec-V's. The LSD soaks up a few HP at the wheels.

hey man, i'm only rude when i'm around a bunch of mazda folks!
the spec-v is nice... no doubt about it... i just don't like them. they make great torque, like you say, but i drove the 91-94 sentra ser and that thing was ALSO a torque monster AND it rev'ed to 7500 AND it handled like a go-kart. since then, the car has been heavier and nicer, and the engine, less rev happy. but like i said a sentice ago, it is much nicer. the "classic" ser's were very purpose built... i.e. sucky trim level, roll-up windows, no folding seats, no armrest... now the ser's and the spec-v are nice... loud clean sound system, nice plush surroundings... i want purpose built. if i wanted nice, i'd get a camry with a 5spd.
to each it's own... i was just having a lil fun, poking fun about a nice car i cannot have...
