wrx's does only have roughly 160 hp at the wheels. And its a 50/50 split between the front and rear. According to what you said they are only pushing 80 max hp? and while a stock protege is pushing roughly 90 at the front wheels. That can't be true because theres no way a stock protege is faster than a wrx topend..hope i made it clear

evo8 0-60: 5.4secs
RX-7 0-60: 4.9secs (some say 5.2secs blah blah)

evo8 1/4: 14.2 secs
RX-7 1/4: mid 13 secs (so say 13.5)

so as you can see an RX-7 can easily take it...so the 787b is not the only car on this side of mazda that can take the evo8... plus alot of rx-7s nowadays are in the lo 11 sec to 12 sec 1/4 mile range....

you knwo what else is funny.... the 2nd gen TurboII RX-7 also gets a 14.5 1/4 mile time... so that could possibly beat an evo8 depending on driver....

oh my times for the evo8 are from car and driver.... my times for the RX-7 i just knwo them cuz i'm such an RX-7 enthusiast

so no prob..... the big boy of mazda is still alive and around to kick some a$$

What happen if RX-8 or RX-7 gain to 1500cc or 1600cc? Errmmm.....it will be exciting

yeah but the stock twin turbos on it are setup liek crap....

the way mazda had it tuned was only to 220bhp..... the 20b came in the cosmo... and only came in an automatic configuration....

BUT..... the motor is easily capable of 400 - 500whp STOCK, when properly tuned...

mazdas 4 rotor (26B) which is 2600cc is pushing 700bhp Naturally Aspirated... now imagine putting a nice big turbo....hell its the 26B, one big turbo might not be enough , think two big turbos should be good tho

theres also a company out there that makes a 6 rotor configuration.... i forget the link tho....

now heres some stuff from history
the 12A engine (1200cc) puts out 100hp
the 13B engine (1300cc) puts out 135hp (equivalent to the same time as the 12A engine)
(the later 13B engines put out 146hp, then even later put out 160hp)

thats from an increase of 100cc

now with the new renesis design.... the 13B is pushing ~250hp.... i think adding those 200 - 300cc will gain it like 50 - 100hp... (just going form what i see form the history of the rotary)

i'm also talking NA setups above....turbo setups are a whole other thing....

anyway pro-slug... i don't knwo much on the wrx... but with only 160hp to the wheels thats a whopping 30% loss from the drivetrain....i will read up more on the wrx in the next upcoming days...probably not tomorrow (working) or the day after (working) but i'll see what i can read up on it on monday.... then i will get back to u on the wrx....

i understand the AWD split in power...but i just dont get how it would work that way. hot wheels made a car that had 2 engines powering 1 rear wheel each...i believe 7oo hp to one wheel, times 2, 14oo hp. i KNOW for a fact that there is a difference in 7oo hp accelerating and 14oo hp accelerating, i just dont see how 2 7oo hp engines cant take 1 14oo engine...

word
p.s. wrx's only push 80 hp on the freeway, our proteges can take it *wink*

I'll just put in my two cents, I agree with vagabond, I just think of it as instead of all the power being focused at once, you have a good chunk of it being used in one area while the other area is using very little. The one that is running at say 80% is dragging the one that is using 20 percent with it, cause the one doing 20% of the work is actually wasting power when it could be used on the area doing the most work. What if one person was pushing the back of a cart at 80% of their capability, while a erson in front is dragging the cart, but at only 20% capability (assume they both hve the same amoutn of power lol) now the person in teh back is tryign to force the one in the front forward faster than he wants to go, rather than just having a full 100% of the power pushing the cart. I dunno its hard to explain I guess, but thats what I got anyway.

I didn't read all of the post but I can tell you this.
I had a 97 Z28 with new heads, chip, cam, exh, headers, 373 gears and ran low 13s to high 12s. The WRX I ran staid with me up to about 65-75 but pettered out befor we hit a 100. It looked stock to me! Thats another reason I got rid of it. You can go out and buy a car that does 14s and still get 30 mpgs and have a warrenty or by a can and put way to much in it to ever come out on top, void the warrenty and only get 8-10 mpg. The WRX isn't a bad car at all, the makers know what they are doing!

I found this tread a little late but I just want to add my .02.....

I happen to have the pleasure of owning an Evo and a Protege and it will take a whole lot of work to get a Protege to out run an Evo. My Evo is bone stock intake and all and my fastest 1/4 mile time is 13.8, and I only dumped the clutch at 3k. Sure the Evo is 30k but it aint like it is wasted money. You get AWD, turbo, forged internals, and four doors. The Evo handles WAY better than any Protege. In fact I cant even see why anyone would even compare the two. To get a Pro in the same class one would have to spend at least 15k and if you got that much money(or credit) more power to ya.

but cuz of the split of power between front and rear wheels, it will not goes as fast as an rx-7 once rolling and they are going at it.... cuz the rx-7 will put all of its whp to the rear wheels.... okay here let me make this example

say this

both rx-7 and ev08 were 100hp (forget all drivetrain loss and blah blah)

the evo8 will have the power split.... so lets take 70/30....

so the evo8 will have 30hp at the front wheels and 70hp at the rear wheels
see now cuz of this power split it will have an awesome launch....

but once rolling, it will only be able to push the max speed of what 70hp can.... the power at both axles don't add up on each other.... to make 100hp.... the max the car will be pushed by is 70hp

see nwo the rx-7 will put down the full 100hp..... it wont get the launch the evo8 can....but it will catch up and pass the evo8 once the start is done.... because it will be able to push the speed that 100hp can.....

you get what i'm tryna say pro-slug....

i knwo roddimus knows what i'm talking about

Eliica eight-wheeler

It doesn't require plutonium to power its flux capacitor. It won't travel through time when it reaches 88mph. And unlike the Doc and Marty McFly's DeLorean of Back To The Future fame, it needs nothing more than a power point to keep it running.

Called the Eliica - short for Electric Lithium-Ion battery Car - this radical 800bhp eight-wheeler from Japan is proof that electric vehicles can be fast and fun to drive, too. Boasting a four-second 0-60mph sprint and seven-second 0-100mph time, the Eliica is faster than a Porsche 911 Turbo.

So what is it like on the road? In this world exclusive, we took the controls to find out. As soon as you climb into the snug cockpit, you realise this car is built for speed. It's more than five metres long, shaped like a bullet and carries its batteries, software and motors in a narrow chassis bed, giving it the lowest centre of gravity of any prototype we've come across.

In tests, the Eliica has recorded a top speed of 370kph (230mph), although its inventor Hiroshi Shimizu claims it could clear 400kph (250mph) in the right conditions. "When you're dealing with technology thought by most to be slow, heavy and lacking range, you must do better than any supercar," he said.

At our drive at Keio University near Tokyo, we punched the 'D' button on the dash, pointed the car down the road and flattened the gas pedal. With a faintly audible whirr of eight 100bhp in-wheel motors, the 0-60mph sprint was smooth, effortless, quiet - and surreal. The mind-boggling acceleration was on a par with that of a 500bhp GT racing car. Yet the lack of a transmission meant there were no jerky cog swaps as we were thrust back in our seat by an incredible 0.8Gs.

With that ultra-low centre of gravity, the car handles surprisingly well, and has virtually no body roll or nose-dive. It turns in sharply with well weighted steering through the front four wheels, and gives adequate feedback. And it does not feel as big or as heavy as its length and 2,400kg kerbweight suggest.

The only downsides, apart from the tiny cockpit, are that it takes 10 hours to recharge, and a production version would cost £170,000. To bring Shimizu's research back to the future, he needs a major firm's financial power behind him and the whole electric car movement.
Peter Lyon

-----

i never knew that a car with a maximum of 100hp (by your thinking) could get to 230mph..
