Unhappy How Embarrassing

Driving home last night in my ES 5-speed. I stop at a light that beside a mid 80's CRX Si, not the newest generation but the one previous. I noticed it had a custom exhaust and 15 inch wheels. I wasn't planning on racing him but when the light turned green he accelerated hard, I floored it. For the first 20 meters we were even, then he waved and blew past me putting about 2 car lengths on my before I hit 90 kph and slowed down.

It was a very humbling experiance, my Protege needs an extra 20 hp. I remarked to my fiance that if we still had our ZX2 (we sold it to get the pro) we would have killed him.

After that race I felt like getting the MR2 out of it's winter hybernation chamber and going to teach this guy what a *real* fast car can do!

Do you think he was on a bottle or something? Or was he at half throttle then floored it? Sounds like he decided when to take off which is interesting.
Those CRX's are quick. Unless a Pro is heavily modified, I wouldn't pick a fight with one. Decent engine and really light weight.
Of course, a good MR2 will beat the pants off it.

I doubt he was on NOS, then he really would have killed me! Like most Hondas the CRX likely has all top end power, he must have known that if we were even through lower revs he'd pull after he hit 5K.

After he raced me he raced a Sunfire GT at the next light, that race looked close.

Sunfire GTs have 150hp, and very good torque, somewhere around 150 too, so hmmm

Is your Pro 5speed or auto?

Maybe he just swapped in a different engine, as I know lots of people here in Vancouver that have done/are doing it.... Or maybe I'm just underestimating the power of a CRX

The CRX SI's are quick, but not incredibly quick, stock. The GT's are also sleds...they're heavy, like the Probes were. The major advantage the SI has over a lot of cars (cept for maybe the Miata) is how light it is, and the accessability of other Honda engines. They can be made quick fairly cheap. My friend went through two CRX's, and never had a chance to do much with them. I would be able to slaughter him straight line, and he held his own in the twisties.

Well this is weird to say the least...I was racing this older model CRX just tonight. I was spraying and I don't know if he was or not but I got him off the line through first then I hit second on got to sprayin', we stayed even most of the way, not sure how fast we were going but it was probably over 65mph. We started braking but something happened when he was trying to brake. I was in front of him by a car length or so when I looked in my driver side mirror and seen him almost hit me in the rearend as he was trying to brake. After that he let up and then I think he tried to brake again and that was when I seen his car jerk to the left and then back to the right and hit the curb. When he hit the curb I heard a big CRASH sound and I knew he had flipped. I hit the brakes and tunred my car around as fast as I could, and I was so scared I almost hit a dumpster in the back ally I went down trying to find him. I got out of my car and he was laying on his belly about 30ft. from his car. There was blood all over the place and he was barley talking, he didn't know what had happened. He must have gotten knocked unconcious during the whole thing. I made sure he was the only one in the car and then I went across the street to a gas station and called 911. Right about the time I got off the phone with the 911 assistant a cop pulled up and then another and so on untill we were surrounded by flashing lights. I tell you one thing, this will be my last time racing on the street. I was so scared, and not really for me but mostly for him. I was just telling myself let him be OK, please let him be OK. This is the scariest thing that has ever happened to me. Nope, No more for me. You never know when its gonna be your turn. It's just sad that it takes someone getting hurt in order for me to realize this.

WOW!!!
I don't know what to say. That is nuts? Maybe he was spraying while he was trying to break. That's really scary stuff. Makes you open your eyes a lot. I don't think we need any "I told you so" speaches but street racing definately comes with a price in the long run.

The scariest part for me is that my 12yr old niece wanted to come with me and it could have been me that flipped with here being the one thrown out the window. It just makes you think about your priorities, thats all.
I don't mean to desciminate agianst anybody here.
But I got my eye opener.

Wow....anyone else need reasons as to why:

1. street racing is gay
2. Spraying on the street is 10 times gayer
3. racing honda's = trouble no matter what?

Scarry.

The only time I'll ever race on the street is in wide open, highway like roads. Even then I will only go to about 15kph ove the speed limit.

Be safe out there.

This is so true , and imagine having a hot *** mp3, the police probably swore you were racing , .... oh well ,, I am glad to see yall are ok though , and just take it easy ,, I usually don't race on the street , maybe on the highway and then that is shaky ,,, .. but carefulness should be exercised

A stock 1st-gen CRX Si is *not* that quick. I have raced a couple of them a long time ago in my 91 CRX Si, and they run mid to high 16's stock.

However, these cars WILL run 15's with some cheap, easy mods (they respond VERY well to tuning, much better than the newer VTEC stuff). They are even faster with a DOHC motor from an 86-87 Integra stuffed into them (this is the original easy Honda bolt-in engine swap). With mild bolt-ons, the DOHC engines are good for 125-130 hp, which is significant in an 1800 lb. 85 CRX 8-) I have seen an 86 Civic Si with an Integra engine (~200 lbs. heavier than an 85 CRX) run 15.3 with only a header, cone filter and cat-back exhaust.
