Dumb, embarrassing question about springs and lowering

A bud of mine was saying something about how on some cars you can just turn the springs upside down and it will compress more, lowring the car up to 2" sometimes. He said he had done it on his Integra and someone else he knew had done it on an Eclipse I think(?).

So, it this true? Can it be done on a P5 if it is true? Are there any harmful effects? Yea I sure would be ghetto, but it's free and you get to keep everything stock, until you wear out your shocks. I might just have to try this if it can be done.
