anything's possible, if you've got the $$$ Just a guesstimate but I would think you're looking at around $3500 USD at least to buy the tranny, then you need someone to install it... I dunno...

I'd rather think to chance the whole car. Although You could get a good money from that autotranny so if You can sell it for a good price, maybe then...

Yeah, it might be easier and cheaper to trade it for a 5 speed

It can be done since the firewalls are the same between the manual and 5 speed cars. You will need the pedal box assembly, clutch master cylinder, and shift linkage. You may also need the transmission mount as well. All these parts can be found at a junkyard for a couple hundred bucks. One other thing that you will need is a manual ECU. Your stock auto ECU will throw a code if doesn't see the speed sensor signal going to it. Other than that, it shouldn't take you too long to get the car prepped to drop the 5-speed in.

wait wait wait...you're saying i'm better off selling my 2002 protege that i haven't even finished paying off than just changing the transmission??? I dont know what kinda math you're doing man. I thought maybe if my transmission is beat up...which it isnt. The dealer would accept a trade for whatever the transmission is worth and i pay the difference when installing the stick.

The dealer won't buy off you old transmission. Doesn't matter if you have less than 100 miles on it. Used is used and if they ever need a transmission they can get one from Mazda for free for warrenty issues.

Seems that you're the one doing the wrong math...you have to go through all the hassle to hunt down all the parts and find someone to install it. After you spent a few grands you'll have a 5-speed but your powertrain warrenty is out the window.

Just think about it twice and if you really want a 5-speed bad then try to sell the car privately and buy a new one.

And why did you get an auto at the first place?

i obviously got an automatic cause i wanted an automatic, and i still do. I was just simply asking a question. I'll follow your advice and sell my car which i've paid about $6,000 maybe more so far, and go buy another $15,000 car....lets that would come up around $21,000...without taxes and considering the fact that i get a good car for $15,000 too. which i highly doubt it. Lets say it costs worst case scenario....4,000 bucks for the transmission and i know someone who can install it for me. I'd be paying about 19,000 in total. WITHOUT having to get rid of a brand new car. Thats the math....where's the fault? What would your math be?? so i can compare it

So...let's say it's 19000 vs. 21000. For an extrra 2 grand I would rather have a brand new car with all the powertrain warrenty intact. Especially it's a 5yr/100000km warrenty.

The thing is you need to take apart a lot of stuff in your car to do the conversion and once you do that your dealer ~may~ refuse to honor your other warrenties in case you need it. And if something goes wrong with your installation you have to pay every penny outta your own pocket to get it redone/fix.

Don't get offended as that's not my intension. It's just not worth it IMO. If you have a high mileage used car and the auto tranny is on its way out then yeah. But ripping apart a relatively new car to do a conversion just doesn't make sense money wise.
