"why would anyone that made over 50K drive a Protege"....well its simple....cause they are great cars...and a true blast to drive...and its why I baught TWO..one for me to play with...and one for my wife.

My P5 is my toy....I have a truck that is my daily driver....and then there is my Harley for pretty days as well.
I have to agree with Sir Nuke, Great car!!! If you counted my salary, my wifes and my military reserve pay, we would be in the top category (and then voted in the wrong category). We drive the Protege5 because we drove alot of other cars and it was the best bang (and handling) for the buck. The most nimble car I've drive since my brother's 85 MR2.

Others looked at before P5 purchase;

Passat Wagon with Audi 4 turbo motor
WRX Wagon
Matrix
Audi A4
Focus (yuk)
Jetta wagon
Sentra
Altima 3.5

For the buck P5 all the way

I make well over 50k and my one and only car is my Protege ES. The amount of money you make can't take anything away from the Protege. The fact that it's relatively inexpensive is just an added bonus!

Yeah, I could spend the extra $$ and get something with more straight line speed but that's pretty much all I'd be getting for an extra $8-$10K. I'll pass. My ES is far from slow and to have a new car as a fun as it is for $219/mo with barely any $$ down, I couldn't ask for much more.
