whats with the scooby dealer?

my friend's lease on his corolla was over in september of 04. in the summer around july or august he wanted to test drive a couple of new cars because he wanted to buy when his lease was up. he picked out a new matrix (which i think he's got his heart set), a new corolla, impreza rs or wrx - he's a big fan of awd. well he and i both went to our local scooby dealer and the salesman asked a few questions and we told him we wanted to test an impreza, probably the wrx. he asked us when we were looking to buy, and my friend told him about the lease being over in sept. so he was going to buy around that time. he goes back into the showroom and asks us to wait. about 5 minutes later he comes out with brochures and fliers for the impreza and says that he is unable to give us a test drive unless we were ready to buy because "subaru owners like to have low miles on their car" and sent us on our way. wtf?

my other friend wanted to test drive a wrx in 2002 but he was sent away too (went to acura to get a new rsx instead). are all scooby dealers like that or does our local dealer have a really **** sales manager? i figure they probably saw us as reckless 20 something year-olds ready to abuse someone else's car, which i could understand to a point, but are you going to send away your customers (who's demographic makes up the majority of wrx buyers) on that assumption alone? for crying out loud, i drive a protege, my friend drove a corolla, and before the rsx, my other friend drove a buick - we are not speed demons.

I walked into a scooby dealer in January with $16K in my pocket to drive a wrx and they turned me down. I demanded to speak with the general manager who told me it was their policy to only let "qualified buyers" drive vehicles as to mantain the cars value for an actual buyer.

I quickly pulled out my wallet with $16K cash and started to "organize and sort" the bills to all face the same direction. My wife just laughed and said "you guys have screwed up this time." as she walked back to the car. It's very funny how serious a dealership gets when you pull out a handfull of $100 bills. I instructed them that could go have sex with themselves (in a different manner) and I'd be taking my money to Mazda or Nissan.

I later went back to work and spoke with our IT guy who just happens to be best friends with SMNA president (now former president). I told him the story and the dealer name....2 days later I received a phone call on my work line from the dealership apologizing profusely for their rudeness and asking if I'd be more interested in the WRX or STi. I told them neither.....but if I had my druthers I'd choose the STi. They told me they had 2 in stock and asked if I would like to set up a test drive. I did. Then came the fun part. How much? The salesman points to the window sticker and says "Well, it looks like $32.2K"....I said, "Well it looks like if that's your best offer I'm off to Mitsubishi to drive the Evo8" He then told me they NEVER haggle off sticker price and that was that.

Next day at work....one more phone call was made. The dealership called me back to let me know that I had "friends in high standing" and they would offer any WRX on the lot for dealer cost + all incentives.

I turned them down. I hate shitty dealers.

The moral of this hugely long-winded story?? Dealerships should fall all over themselves to work with you. If they don't they don't want your money bad enough.

They act like they don't want to sell cars...which you would think would be their top priority! You never know who is walking into your dealership, how much money they have, or even who they know. Why would you risk jeopardizing the integrity of your business??

Arrrrgh.

Thankfully the last 2 new cars I've bought have all been because Scott was working at the dealership at the time. Basically we picked what we wanted and took it home with us for however long we wanted (until we made up our mind to buy/do the paperwork). I had the P5 for a month before we ever signed papers on it!

oh blah...i hate that. I just work the deal all the way o the F&I manager and then see what they offer me. Most of the time its better than the bank but sometimes I can get a good bank rate.

There are more people with bad credit than good. They don't care if they sale to people with good credit because the'll make up the money on the bad credit ones.
I think I paid for YOUR closing costs. LOL

it sounds like our local dealer arent the only jerks around. pretty sad when you consider that the volvo dealer let me drive a new s40 without a salesperson having to ride along. i test drove a mazda3 and the salesman had the courtesy to sit down and talk with me about numbers right near closing time. maybe next time i have the curiosity to test a scooby out i'll tell them i'm ready to buy today and see how much further i get next time.
