SunRoof vs. MoonRoof

Wat is the difference between the sunroof and moon roof, i alsways thought that a sunroof when open the glass is outside the car, and a moon roof has the glass stay insdie the car (so my 01 Protege therefor has a moonroof)

from http://www.sunroofs.org/faq.htm

What is the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof? Sunroof is the generic term used to describe an operable panel in a vehicle roof which can let in light and/or air. Moonroof is a term created by Ford in the 70's, yet is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs.

but this site: http://www.geocities.com/davebrownonline/20020424.htm

goes a little further... "Everything is a sunroof, but a moonroof is only when the panel slides into the car’s roof and hides itself. If the panel doesn’t do that, then it is not a moonroof."

And the debate continues...

Ahhh, so those awful looking things on the Hondas are Sunroofs and we have the more elegant Moonroofs in our Proteges? I like that.

I've always understood it like what 99&00Protege described it. I basically see it this way, if the exterior panel is closed, is there a way for it to have light come through (glass panel) if so then it is a moonroof. If it is a solid piece preventing light then it is a sunroof.

here's how _I_ see it:

a sunroof will slide back allowing the roof to be opened up.

a moonroof would only be a glass panel in the roof that might be able to tilt to allow ventilation, but not have the ability to slide all the way open.

i agree that IN GENERAL they are really the same thing, just marketing has brough a couple different term to make something sound more appealing, even if it isn't.

as far as installation cost is concerned, i would advise against getting one unless it is something that comes straight from the factory. most aftermarket sun/moon roofs that i have seen have a tendancy to leak.
