Another reason not to buy one. Van's are 100 times better then SUVs and have way more room. Just my two pennies.

That article shows just how critical it is to get side air bags. All the SUVs without them failed miserably.

Yeah, I watched a special on TV regarding this story. It is not only another reason not to buy one, but just another fact, I might say, to get rid of SUVs in general.

Yup.

Not nearly as many safety requirements, and something like 5 times more likely to be involved in an accident in the first place...

And the illiterate masses allow themselves to be deluded into buying what they think is a "safer" vehicle because it has airbags tacked on.

What really disgusts me about anything like this is that people insist on defining "safety" as crash-survivability. Crashing a car ISN'T SAFE AT ALL. Safety SHOULD mean crash-avoidance as much as it does survivability. I'm appalled by the fact that airbags are mandatory, but ABS isn't even available on a lot of cars. Shows you where the priorities are, doesn't it? Thanks, insurance companies and injury lawyers.

I'm going to email that link to everyone I know who has, or wants, an SUV.

You know, last summer I witnessed a pretty spetacular accident involving an suv. For those from Ontario...

I was driving on the 401 west near Yonge (for those of you who know the Toronto area) and was beside another guys going the same speed (about 110km/hr) in a Mercedes suv. Anyways, traffic stopped in front of us and we were both looking at each other when it stopped. I don't know why we both looked over at the same time. But when we looked back to see the cars in front of us had stopped, we both went into Holy Crap mode and hit the brakes. I managed to stop in time but he slammed right into the car in front of him. Plastic was flying everywhere! Guess he would have stopped in time if he was driving a car...

Anyways too bad for him but luck for me I didn't kill my P5. And that's why I don't think I'll ever buy an suv.

There is NO reason to get the outlander over the forester

dont forget suv strike other cars..usually smaller and lighter vehicles.
that makes them extremely dangerous as they strike higher up into the passenger compartment inflicting heavy damage.
i shudder to think what happens to the people inside....
some of the suvs are huge as monsters!

how does the protege do in a side collision?

i saw a rediculous accident a few years ago on my way home from college. It was in bradenton, FL right off I-75. i stopped at a light which had 2 left turn lanes. i was in the left most lane and a suburban pulled up in the other turning lane. We were the only cars on the area (or so we thought) since it was 2am. The light went green and i went and cleared the intersection since i was on the inside lane and i have a smaller, quicker car. In my rearview i see this flash and the suburban next to me was hit by a drunk w/o his headlights on going about 85mph. The suburban made 3 complete turns and caught fire for a few seconds. The worst part was that it was a group of dad's and their kids comin home froma baseball game. Out of the 5 people in the car only the driver was still in the car after the hit. the other 4 were all ejected. 2 ppl were wearing seatbelts the others werent. One kid was found over 50 ft from the point of impact. The driver was actually the most injusred b/c there were no airbags in the thing and the seats didn't contain him at all. I beleive they all lived but it scared the **** outta me cuz i was w/ my roommate and he was in the passenger seat. if he woulda hit me my buddy would've been killed instantly and i prolly wouldn't have survived.

Crazy **** man. but SUV's are just too big for their own good. i just don't understand how some people can justify the tiny level of utility they actually have while giving up their safety, everyone else's safety, polluting the air, and generally pissing people off.
