Rob Zombie VS. Mazda
#17
It's not about selling out...it's about an artist relinquishing control over his music in order to get substancial payment for his work.
The only way Rob Zombie would be able to control where his music can be used is to become his own publisher. This means that he'd have to personally give the "okay" to each organization who wanted to use a sound clip or lyric from any of his songs. It also means that he would have to personally keep his ear out for every song, radio station, television show, music video, and commercial to make sure that no one is using his intellectual property without his permission. Along with all this, he would have to concentrate on creating and distributing his music and try to sell it worldwide. It's too much work for one man, or even one organization to do...and he'd probably get paid next to nothing.
The only other way I can see him getting around it is to instruct his publisher not to sell rights to any commercials...which I'm unsure if it's even possible.
But back to the whole "selling out" debate... Wanting to recieve payment for one's work is not selling out. It's when an artist compromises his (or his band's) roots and beliefs to make money...that's when he's sold out.
