well there are two things said never to discuss in a public forum....religion...and politics...for both will cause nothing but debate and arguments that will NEVER be solved.....and this thread reaks of both....thus....think what you want.....

AFTER ALL......ITS A FREE COUNTRY.......still.

That's a disingenuous argument. Everybody knows it was intended to mean the singular Judeo-Christian god, even if it doesn't explicitly say that. That was clearly the intent of the alteration of the Pledge. If a Muslim lobby group lobbied for it to say "Allah" and then said, "well, it doesn't say which Allah," think most Christians would accept that? I doubt it.

Regardless, even if one accepts the loose interpretation, it's still exclusionary for people who have religions with multiple deities (i.e., gods, not God) or those who eschew religion. It is promotion of one class of religions to the exclusion of others, by the state, and therefore shouldn't be permitted.

this is all still a waste of well-meant energy and effort.

this is a pretty intense thread,

in a way, under god assumes that everyone believes that there even is a god. And if its a free country then in effect that would be unconstitutional right?

whatever though, i really dont mind what exactly the words mean or describe, i think, personally, it represents the love for the US and pride and patriotism n stuff for the flag. oh and like the 4th post or something said about how all the other religions care. well, muslims and jews and others(but not all) believe in god.

And, specifically, in Islam, we warship and pray to the same god which the christians and jews believe in. We just merely call our god Alllah because its an arabic name for god.

somewhat off topic but i thought id jsut share. im Muslim if you didnt notice, and, not all muslims are terrorists or in anyway support Bin Laden, its a pretty small percentage of extremists that do(like the KKK or Black Panthers).

I know most of you knew all that too, but i had to say it, youd be suprised how many insults and stuff ive gotten since 9/11. Ever since i just try to educate and stuff, so forgive me.

Peace

that's it exactly! ppl zero in on "under god" and they freak out, "what does god and state have to do with each other? there's no room for religion in a public institution! why, they're teaching my nancy how to pray! in fact, they tried to force communion on her!"

"let's rally our forces and focus our energy on removing that dangerous religion from the schools!"

bastards!

lol, i'm just playing guys (and girls). i really think this whole issue is petty.

I'd have to go ZoomZoomH on this one and have it reverted to the 1942 version. I am an atheist and feel there is no god, obviously, and I love my country and plan to serve her one day in the armed forces. I would willingly give my life for the country, not a god. Let's change the pledge, and all the religious people that bitch can go f**k themselves six ways to Sunday!!

(Just my opinion, no one take offense )

Hmmm...
Is there really a difference between the fundmentalist movement in the US and the Taliban?

Religion is a means to control people. Sure it was helpful getting us out of our caves and keeping folks from sleeping with their kids - i.e helping to "civilize" us ( a function now performed by governments).

Religion also addressed the basic curiosity of humans, explaining the existence of life - giving supposed meaning to it (a function now performed by science)

Historically, there's been huge power struggles between religion(s) and various governments and later, with science, as each of these entities wrestles with the control over the masses and ontrol over thought.

Unfortunately, all three entities are now in the backseat b/c the means to control and dominate the masses is not with gov't, religion or science, but rather, lies in the hands of of multi national companies, world bank, etc. These folks are the ones who now control politics, religous leaders, and pay the scientists...

Life sucks and we still haven't figured it out yet!
