Picking up my Speed6 tomorrow

As many of you know, I have been working on getting into a Speed6. Finally got my check from the credit union in the mail today (har, har) so I'll be picking it up tomorrow. Not sure if pics are necessary since we all know what the cars look like, but if pressed I am sure I can post some up.

Continuing with the mod bug I caught many years ago, I have already purchased several things for the car. Auto-dim/compass mirror, cargo net, clear corners. I also lucked into a workshop manual and tech highlights CD (eBay can be your friend). I will be getting some springs for it as soon as all the players shake out (I like the AutoEXEs, but they are pricey). May or may not do any power mods, depends upon pricing and budget.

Congrats on the purchase--you should post a pic or two, we love to drool here.
Anyway, Matty never obliged yet, so maybe you should.
As for power mods, I think at least a good exhaust would be in order, to free up a little more power.

welcome to the club man. I'm just waiting for Ken to send me a total on my stuff and I'll be modded with ya.

Don't forget to get the MAZDASPEED CAI for the car. It's a big imporvement and sounds amazing. With the BOSE radio off you can hear that thing spooling like a madman. IT freaks out the kids in the hondas when I drive by and hit 17psi!

p.s. STAY AWAY FROM THE RE-FLASH if you haven't gotten it already.

I asked if it had been flashed but no response yet. Right now I am just happy the dealer didn't put in the front license plate bracket (Ohio requires them). I am also trying to get my hands on a BOV from a first gen Mitsu Eclipse, apparently lots of people are crushing them to raise the pressure. Not sure if I will do that, but being metal I figure it has to be more durable than the stock plastic piece.

Thanks Gary, I'll be sure to post up some pics to make up for Matty's letdown! And are you shilling about the exhaust because you are carrying them for the Speed6 now?! I do read that is a nice mod, along with either the TMIC upgrade or FMIC. I am also looking forward to hearing about the several ECU upgrades that are supposedly in the pipeline. That will have to wait for next time I am home, want to get some miles on and also Christmas has put a big dent into the finances (not the least of which is this, my present!).

I wouldn't waste your time with a bypass valve mod. No performance for that.

Here's what on my plate.

TMIC upgrade from p-garage
ATP 3" catless DP (huge gains and HUGE top end improvement)
Cobb Tuning Accessport - Just have to read up...WAY too many features to list

I've already got the MS intake though and it's a highly recommended piece.

Only reason for my getting a BOV is that it is cheap. Also I have seen some pictures of blown apart stock ones on another forum, figure I can change it now and not have to worry about it later.

I like what I have read about the Cobb, just waiting to hear from others' experience once it is released. I would like to get the intake, like I said just limited by finances. I still have 3 months of vacation, Christmas is taking a big bite plus I am putting in a full bath in my basement. If only I had a rich uncle!

i've never had a problem with the bypass valve and I've never heard of anyone else having problems either.

why buy something that is cheap if it hurts performance/driveability?? I don't understand. If money is tight why not save that cash for something that will actually work?

There are threads over on Mazda6club forum about this. One really nice picture of a stock BOV blown apart (no, I do not know the back story on it). I am looking at this as a preventive measure. When I say cheap I mean inexpensive (ie $20). This particular mod seems to be painless, slightly widen the bolt holes and the DSM valve bolts right up. Most people are crushing the valve to increase the spring tension to up the blow-off pressure. And it looks stock which as we all know is important with some dealers. By all accounts it actually improves response of the turbo, reading between the lines I suspect there are a lot of the stock valves leaking by (as I am sure you know, the 15 psi of the stock turbo is above atmospheric pressure which means almost 30 psi actual). I know what you are saying about saving the money, but when an opportunity presents itself in a situation like this I will take it.

i hear ya. The way a bypass valve functions is to prevent reflux back through the turbo in reverse. Having a higher release pressure does nothing for performance. If you're worried about valve failure the dealer will replace it under warranty for 50k miles.

I've used bosch bypass valves on cars with a LOT higher boost pressures than this. My turbo pinto was 26psi from a T3/T4 and never had a single problem.

I'm not trying to talk you out of modding your car how you want...just want you to know that you'll not get any performance gain from the mod if that's what you're looking for.

No, none of the companies I pimp for have an MS6 exhaust.
But you two are really making me impatient. There are now rumors of an MS RX-8 and I just need to calm down long enough to see if it's really gonna happen. If not I may end up in an MS6 after all.
If it does happen I will sell everything I own and live in it if I have to, LOL. (by myself, of course, since I'm sure divorce will soon follow the purchase).

It's in my hands now. All I can say is, Oh My Goodness!!! This car is amazing. My test drive was pretty short due to time constraints, coming home I got to open it up (not to redline, I am breaking it in well). I can see that this car is very easy to get into trouble in, engine is smooth and you have no idea you are bombing along well above the speed limit until you look down at the speedo. Now I am going to be impatiently waiting to get the first 600 miles in. Pics will come tomorrow.

I do understand changing the BOV isn't going to give more power Matty. The engineer in me just likes it when things don't break without warning. I will probably get it but may not install it just yet. I am planning on checking the clutch pedal adjustment specs, killed it twice coming home. Thing just feels like a light switch (on-off) and I don't think that's right.

Gary, I won't tell you the car would replace your wife, but you would have something fun to take your mind off your misery! I know what you mean, the first time I went to the dealer was just to check it and the RX-8 out. One drive and I was hooked. I think it's going to cost me a Speed3 next year as my gf really likes that (says it's cute) and she has been really good about me getting this.

I love the car but wish I had never taken back to the dealer for the re-flash. IT ruined the low-end power.

When are we going to meet up for for a drive? I'll have my new toys after the first of the year (anniversary on the 29th) so we can compare side by side if you want.

Haven't checked yet but according to what the salesman told me the flash was already done. The guy was acutally pretty knowledgeable, he told me about the rear seats folding down which according to people on another forum wasn't widely known.

I can't say about a get together Matty. I've got three months of vacation left, have to get some stuff done and hopefully just after Christmas my gf and I will have some time alone without any kids. I'll ask her if she would want to travel south (I have wanted to see the museum at Barber MP for a while now).

And here is what you have been waiting for, pictures! I have been busy today putting miles on so I can light the fuse once I reach 600 miles, but she will definitely have a bath tomorrow.

Very nice. I love that color.
I haven't seen one in person, the only thing that surprises is the wheel gap, I really thought
Mazda would have given it a more European look.
