lets make this a daily entry to keep up on real life

We have that in my industry, but it is more along the lines of "you need this training to keep working." When I got my Chief's licenses (steam, motor, gas turbine unlimted horsepower) I thought I was done taking tests. Wrong! Now there is something called STCW (Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) that is administed by the UN's IMO (International Maritime Organization). Talk about bureaucracy! Every couple of years after a maritime incident they decide the solution to more accidents is more training. No idiots, the answer is to crack down on countries who don't administer their own programs and allow documents to be bought by unqualified people, as well as permitting companies to operate in a slip-shod fashion. Those of us working for countries who follow the letter of the rules now have to carry 10 pounds of certificates wherever we go to prove that we have the training required. Not to mention that taking the classes (without pay) cuts into our vacation time when we are home off the ships. Significant others generally have some issues with that.

If they want to pay me to ship me off somewhere for seminars or training, I'm fine with it I don't have family or a girlfriend so it's not like I'm really 'stuck' in Rochester (aside from the 3 seasons out of the year that I take classes at RIT).
As of right now I'm only DCSE (Dell Certified Systems Expert) certified lol. The testing for it is easy for me but omg it takes so long to get certified for servers, desktops, portables, printers, etc. The benefits? I can order any parts I need for any systems covered under warranty quickly online without question, and they are at work the next morning.

Yep, my degree in PC/Network technology and A+ certification doesn't promise that i will keep my job when this contract runs out. What I would like......is a challenging yet rewarding job working for someone like the federal government......I want benefits and insurance that is worth a **** and a career that will last me until retirement. I don't need a 6 figure salary.....mazdas aren't all *that* expensive
