I am ... AMERICAN!

Here is what gets me about the whole assimilation thing. If you go back a few decades, the people who emigrated here wanted to be here so much that they would not let their kids speak anything but English so that they would become Americans quicker. I do believe it is important to know your roots and respect them, but I also believe if you choose to live in a different country and become a citizen then you need to assimilate into that culture. Part of what makes us who we are is the concept of the melting pot, different people coming together to make a greater whole.

Krazie, part of being an american is to be able to be cool about having your thread hijacked!! Congrats!!
If I lived in a shithole country and saw another land with freedom and enterprise and hot ladies...and suppose I decided to pack up and move there....I'd probably consider it a privilage that I would not only be accepted and allowed to live there and appreciate the freedoms but i'd be allowed to own my own business.
It takes everything I have in me not to go over there and pick a fight. Of course that's the dumb redneck in me.
And to think I'm considered a bleeding heart liberal here in Alabama.

You guys are cracking me up. I'm just glad I can have all the priviliges everyone else in this country has.
My two cents on the threadjack topic is that if you live in this country you should respect its' culture and the people. I don't know of any other country where people will accept foreigners the way they do here, but a lot of people who emigrate into America feel like they don't need to blend in. Retaining your cultural heritage is important, but I think it's more important to respect the culture of those people who let you live in their country.
But then again I feel more American than Bosnian anyway, and I'm honored to be a citizen of this country, whereas a lot of people I know have dreams of going back. Everyone's got their own views I guess ...

sorry to threadjack krazie!
