Thumbs up Macintosh G4

Although IBM/Motorola is seriously behind in speed compared to Intel, the Macintosh finally has an OS worthy of professional praise-- Unix and their derivatives have long provided superior performance over ALL high volume consumer operating systems, and when Apple announced (after years of oblivious dingbat waffling) that they *finally* had a definitive game plan in terms of their OS directions, I was very, very pleased. OS 10 has been a long time coming, like, since the Macintosh was first released in 1984, but now that it's finally here and actually incorporates functions average people can use, anyone who owns a current generation Macintosh has rightful reason to be proud and happy with their choice. These are world class machines.

Unix kicks serious ***.

I agree with almost everything you said Protegemaster, except that they're are not that far behind in speed if at all.
I'm running a G3 400 with 512MB Ram & OSX. My friends are always saying that my computer seems to run faster than their newer Wintel machines.
It's not just about Mhz
Look at the new Dual 1.25 Gig G4's
167Mhz system bus per Processor
2MB DDR L3 Cache per Processor
Plus the ability to hold 2 optical drives and 4 Harddrives
I don't think they're seriously behind in anything. Although hopefully IBM's 670 64bit PowerPC chip will be the basis of the upcoming G5

Look at the new Dual AMD Opterons

6.4 GB/sec system bus bandwidth.
16-bit 800 Mhz DDR system bus. - OWNED!

1 MB L2 Cache (L2 closer to cpu core = better). - OWNED!

Plus the ability to hold hard drives? Since when does the cpu handle HDDs? - OWNED!

Oh, yeah. Want 32-bit performance? At 800 Mhz clock speed the Opteron outperforms the current 1.6 Ghz P4, which in turn outperforms the 1.25 ghz G4. That's in 32-bit EMULATION mode. - OWNED!

So why exactly would I buy a G4/G5 ?
Oh yeah and it's the IBM 970 PowerPC.

P.S. The memory controller for the Opteron offers 5.4 GB/sec PER CPU! YAY!

Edit: A G3 400 running Mac OS X feels faster than what? A Pentium MMX running XP. Maybe, but not likely. OS X is a beast and it feels quite sluggish. Maybe cause you have a somewhat decent amount of RAM. But again, not likely. I'd bet my *** that my Linux system on my 1.1 Ghz T-bird with 256 MB ram feels MUCH faster than yer OS X. Sorry.

OS X sucks ***** on a G3.... thats just fact

try it on any g4... its far from slow... and very very stable. i mean what other operating system can you edit a full feature film, render it in the backround with FCP, while still working on the graphics in photoshop for the cover, and surf the web and chat on instant messenger, and not have it freeze up, or bog to hell.... i know xp wont do that. and if you dont believe i can do that, i do it regularly.... weekly that is. and this is only a G4 533mhz, 1.5gb, 100gb WD drive and a 40gb WD drive for the OS.... both 7200rpm....

10.2.3 is a pretty damn responsive operating system, try it, im sure you used a older version. 10.0 was dog slow, 10.1 was a major improvement, and 10.2 was just awesome... all the features are here, all software is ready, and its fast!

Apple builds a good computer, if you dont have an open mind, try one, and dont like one... you're not obligated to like them. They're purpose built machines, non-mainstream.... not your average PC... but a damn good computer. Its all just in your taste i guess. And the fact is, the macintosh is just superior for multimedia (audio, video, graphics.. etc).... where as the pc doesnt compare.

But hey, whatever, you enjoy your computer, i enjoy my mac, and dont think i payed too much for it, i payed 1500 as it is with my upgrades and a nice trinitron monitor at 1720x1344. but you get what you pay for, and this is a quality machine.

Im sorry if i drug that out... but i get pretty pissy when people rag on apples, when really they have no justification for their arguement, other than pointless statements like "os x is slow"

tiem to go check my systeminfo for free ram
start > run ; "CMD" ; "systeminfo"

hmm now lets see

total physical memory : 192mb
availible physical memory : 30mb HAHA

but then virtual memory is a whole different story

virt. mem. max size : 659mb
virt. mem, availible : 259mb

hehe
what else does it say about my system....hmmm....... damn I closed the command prompt already

can't wait til my friend gives me his 256mb of pc133 ram
I have one dimm slot free too....so YAY!!!
256 + 192 = 448mb

EDIT : OH yeah...i also went back to win2kpro from winxppro. plus service pack 3 is pretty nice for win2k and makes it up to par with xp IMO. But currently i formatted and couldn't find my win2kpro cd....so i've got winxppro installed....and i don't wanna format my drive again...cuz i took me 2 long hard days to get back my 20 gig ftp.... (was a 40 + gig ftp before format)

Apples are also nice machines....I don't own one...and I don't think i ever will....but i still won't rag on something they made.

I just probably won't own one because I build my own pcs from parts that i get from who knows where....so yeah...my pc is a piece of junk thrown together on a jetway motherboard...with a P3 733MHZ processor.....on a crappy 15" monitor...powered by the all time popular Nvidia GPU (GF 2 MX 200)

Yeah apples are very nice computers. We get to fix like 20 a week at the computer shop where I work.

Please try READING my post next time.

I said OS X is sluggish ON A G3.
You yourself said that OS X "sucks *****" on a G3.

I'll buy a Mac when I when to be unable to upgrade most of my hardware. If I feel that having a computer that Apple themselves will make obsolete in a year then sure. By making OS X the fat beast that it is Apple basically made obsolete any non-G4 computer. G3's aren't THAT old. If I want fruity case designs that favor form over function then I'll buy a Mac.

You say you can multi-task really well on a Mac. Now try encoding a DVD while playing Unreal 2003. Yeah I thought so...

I give Apple major kudos for OS X. If they port it to the x86 platform, my life will be complete and I will have reached computing zen.

What's funny is, the ad people for Apple always claim how their computers are faster than higher equipped PCs... yet somehow... they're SLOW!!!!!!! Congratulations!!! You've won the stupid award apple!!

Where the speed that they claim is superior is useful is in certain mathematical computations though, which are great for benchmarks, but blah! Let's play bubble trouble

Oh yeah! A couple of friends of mine ended up tossing an iMac of an 8 story building, the piece of crap montior in there screwed up, and then what the hell are you supposed to do??

You said a month or so ago you had a dual 1 gig g4? Busted!

Ever screw with a dual 1ghz G4 machine running Mac OS X.... now thats freakin powerful, and what i use as my main machine at home.... though i bought it exclusively for video editing (final cut pro) and photoshop. i now use it as my main machine surfin the web, email and the whole nine yards, hell microsoft office is better on mac os x imo, than on xp or 2000. but i do own a nice pc that i use quite freaklently.... ahhh damn hang over anyways...

Good catch Dan!!!

Also I hope you guys know that virtual memory is not the same thing as ram. Virtual memory is a an amount of space set aside on the harddrive for the computer to transfer data to and fro for quicker access. "Not as quick as main memory"

Well it's close to as fast... it's only about 1000x slower, that's all
