Mustangs have their own sand bags. All that crap on the back end (seats, trunk hardware, etc) has to weigh more than the sand bag I put in the back of the pickup and the bed. More or less just saying I could care less what the layout of the vehicle I drive is in the winter (unless it is AWD or 4WD, both are awesome in the snow).

But I would say with all the great technology we have today to keep your car straight (DSC, Traction Control) then RWD would have to be the best.

yeah no kidding, the other day, while I was parking, I had to open the door on my RX-7 to make sure I was parked in the box, and guess what happened when I opened the door and leaned outside? the damn shoulder belt retracted and almost took my head off!!!!!

man those automatic belts are useless, I bet the traditional 3pt seatbelt works MUCH better than those POS

none of those electronic gizmos here hehe

no ABS or any of that ****

I drifted the protege a couple of days ago, when it started snowing here in Canada

I love RWD...

but all I've ever driven is FWD (basically an old 1985 626, and this protege....(also driven a Ford Probe GT, Chrysler Neon, Acura 3.2)

driven ford 10+ times
driven neon about 3 times
driven acura 3.2 about 2 times

the 626 I've driven about 5 times
and the protege I've well driven for a while now.... 2 years (started driving it when i got it in may of 99)(but only 2 years of full time driving it)

I love RWD cars tho (maybe the RX-7 beeing my all time Fav car and it beeing RWD contributes to me liking RWD)

I can't wait til I get the rx-7 and take it for a drifting time in the snow

I drifted the protege on saturdsay tho...I'll draw up a diagram of how i did it....hehe...my mom got scared...hehe
well it was kinda like a drift

Speaking of all of the electronic gizmos...do you guys think removing cruise control would have any benefits? I never use it anyways, so I was just curious

here is a quick very crappy drift animation of what i did on saturday that i made

remember the only reason this worked was because it was snowing and it was VERY slippery

THE Way I did the picture....makes it look like i started to drift at the end of the turn....but in reality the drift was throughtout almost all of the turn....just not the first 2 frames there was no drifting

hey this may not be drifting...but it was still fun and i got the car under control

the last thing we need is more crap in our car that'll a) eventually break b) get in the way of our driving c) add weight

I'm seeing more and more cars everyday with that bullshit added on, and it makes me glad I didn't get ABS on my car and that my car has nothing but the basics. I'm glad that the RX-7 and Miata for the longest time doesn't have this bullshit (although the FD did come with ABS, but that's ok).
Why? A good DSC or traction control system is there to save your butt. Unless they are overly sensitive you probably won't even activate them. And if you need that extra little bit of slide you can turn either of them off on every car I have seen. Plus they only add a small amount of weight, most of the hardware is already there just need to add some sensors and depending on the car a control module of some sort. Its kind of like saying I wish my processor wasn't so fast and didn't have all that cache and parallel pipelines and stuff.

But I said the thing about the electronic wizardy because:

A) FWD is better than RWD in the snow and muck.
B) Unless RWD cheats using technology.

Probably a couple pounds of weight reduction

And about those automatic seatbealts, they are probably in a bunch of cars around '90. I think it was mandated that you either have those or airbags for safety and in the next gen pro they got the airbags. I know for a lot of insurance companies you get a discount for a car with automatic seatbelts OR airbags

Yeah automatic seatbelts = frickin retarded

They aren't even fully effective unless you take the initiative to buckle the bottom piece. I don't know about the Protege but our old car had ones where the shoulder belt came back and then you buckled the bottom one. What the hell is the point? Does it take more effort to buckle the whole damn thing as one unit?

Ditto your comments. The BMW traction control system sucks all of the driving fun out of these cars. I you even approach the car's traction limits, the engine shuts down. And the worst thing is that BMW took LSD's out of all of their non-"M" cars and gave us the crappy DSC system instead.

BTW your story brings up an entertaining thing I saw at an autocross once... a late-model BMW with a large piece of masking tape across the steering wheel with the following words written on it in black marker... "IS THE TRACTION CONTROL OFF?"

So you were driving this guys car and did not know how to turn off his DSC system? Because if you are going to race you should at least be familiar with the car you are driving. Even if you have to rtfm.
