Damn Fram!

Have you guys ever noticed the 6607 series of Fram oil filters? They don't fit the BP 1.8 at all, I wanted to change my oil around midnight last night and the only store that would be open was Wal-Mart. Wouldn't you know it...all they carry is Fram! So of course I couldn't change my oil

Is there any way we can contact Fram to fix this damn problem? I know they have to be losing $ from this mix up. Think about how many people out there that have Pro's, Excorts, Tracers, Capri's, Kia's, am I missing any???

This brings me to another question. Have any of you ever used a Fram 6607 series oil filter on your Pro's?

6607 is the filter from Fram to use on Pros and Miatas too. I am not sure you did your oil change right, considering it was late at night, right? How doesn't it fit? What is exactly do you think is wrong with it? I have been using the same filter, and does not even matter what the number is. 6607 is a number used by Fram only, all other companies use different numbers, but use the same filters. Puralator makes 85% of all oil filters anyways, and they just get marked and sold by different companies. As for fram, I am sure they design their own. But I am planning to use Mobil1 oil filter, along with Mobil1 Synthetic oil. Because the synthetic oil outlasts the regular filters mileage wise.

funny. when i got the car and changed the oil, the numbers on the FRAM filter says "PH3593". then i noticed when i asked some dude for the protege filter he gave me a PH6607 which is small as hell and next time i went back to the PH3593. hEH!

OMFG!

WARNING: I NEVER USE FRAM OIL FILTERS

GO here : http://minimopar.net/oilfilterstudy.html

You will see that this guy was SERIOUS about analyzing almost ALL oil fliters.

I use AC Delco or Puralator Pure one.

I REPEAT DO NOT USE FRAM..... you'd be better off with a sock in a coke can !!

Hmmm...funny indeed ProtegeDx! In the 3-4 years I have owned my Pro I haven't ever been able to use the Fram oil filters. Maybe were on to something here? ProtegeDx which region of the country do you live in? I'm in the Mid-West...

Turbonium, by 6607 series I meant Fram only...as a whole...Hence DG6607 (dble grd), 6607 (rgulr), catch my drift?
As far as fitment, the 6607 all the stores are supplying here are almost twice as small in diameter and height.

Concerning another incedent of the 6607 series oil filters. One Sat. earlier this year my friend that works at O'reily's claimed that all the oil filters were the same. Of course his computer and the Fram catalog show the 6607 fit our cars. When he brougt them back to the counter it was obvious upon comparison the Fram was no where near the size of the A/C Delco filter. Don't know about you guys, but I trust my eyes!

Maybe I can post some pics of them?

Hey, zchild, I am not really sure why 6607 didn't fit. I know that filters differ some time is size, but as long as the thread is right, and the filter does not obsruct anything, it should be fine. It does not necessarily have to be identical. I have a filter book at work where I change oils. We use compnay called Kendall (filter made by Purolator), and the filter for my 1997 DX is the same size as 6607. I did a few Proteges that came in, and took off Fram 6607 and put one back which was the same size. I looked in the book, and almost all small Mazda use that same filter. They have been since 1989, because in the 1988 model year, the filter used to be bigger, and that is probaby the one you are referring to. And it is like I have said before, as long as thread is the same, and the filter does not get into ways of other components around it, you should be fine. 6607 is the one for your 1991 model, and I do not see a reason why you should not use it.

OK...I see that I'm going to need to get some pics of the situation to get my point across. Since I don't have a digicam it's going to be a while, I'll borrow one of my friends. Check back here in a week or so turbonium, you'll see what I mean. For now...If I were to put the 6607 on my car even if the thread was the same the filter's diameter is not large enough to cover/seal the oil hole on the back of the block. Therefore if I were to put it on, fill the engine with oil and start the car all the oil would just come spilling out. I seriously think some thing is wrong with the 6607 the auto stores are distributing here in Wichita. Well, just hold tight until I can get those pics...I'm sure ProtegeDx know what I'm talking about.

Ok, now that you told me what the problem is like, I have a mental picture of what is going on. In this case, I would recommend the filter from an older generation 323 sedan or hatch. You have a 1991 model, right? Go to the store and look up the filter for 1988 Mazda 323. I know for the fact it is a larger filter, and I think that should solve the problem. I hope it helps, and you can be back on the road.

I will heed the warning that Fram filters suck next oil change - but for this one I just did my oil last weekend, and slapped a 6607 right on my P5 - no fitment trouble at all.

But next time, I'll skip the Fram filter - that's a good read dre2ooo - thanks for the link.

i found that when i changed my oil, the filter that i took off was much bigger than the fram double guard that i put on. initially i was like WTF!, this filter is mad small - it can't be the right one. so i went back to walmart and checked again, but it was correct - 6607 was the number. are the other brands that are specifically for the pro bigger? cause i'd rather have that.
