It's the same LCD screen used on the Mazda 6 which has climate control and uses the right side of the readout to display the various settings.

Check out this PDF file.......scroll down a few photos to the one showing the LCD screen and you will see the "unused" area of the Mazda 3 screen in action on the Mazda 6.

It's just cheaper to manufacture ONE LCD display screen to install in both cars than to have a separate unique part for each.

Wiring is done that way too......all cars have a complete wiring harness.....usually if you want to add an electrical type option that your car wasn't ordered with you have the connector right there for you to plug into. Cheaper to build identical chassis with one harness for all.

Also they did use it in the european 3's I think. It's used with the auto air conditioning system. If I looked hard enough I could probably find the pic I saw that had a 3 with auto air using the screen to it's full potential.

Update: yeah I went to the UK website and yeah the 3's there have the auto air. They don't seem to have cruise control though. Not like you would ever use it in europe anyway.
