Angry Got a car starter installed...

…yesterday and I notice this morning that the shop where I got it done at accidentally spilt some of the glue/silicon they use to keep the transmitter stuck to the inside of my windshield.

The spill is a big drop that is currently sitting right near my shifter (automatic ’05 Mazda 3). I called the shop and left them a message, but does anyone have any “home” remedies to remove this stuff without scratching anything up?

Thanks

Twinky

Gas...but I suggest trying Nail Polish Remover or WD-40 first..less flammable.

hehe, yeah, less flamable is always better.

I dont really see the shop having anything else that they would be able to use.

Thanks for the replies

Will it destroy the finish of the surface?

I'll probably try out a little bit on a more hidden part and see what the reaction is.

there is also a product from places like canadian tire, hardware stores, home depot ... called "goof-off" ... it's used for removing paint and things like that ... dunno if it is non-marring though.

I say take it back to the shop and have them clean it off. If they mess up the finnish then they will fix that also. If you mess it up you have to pay!

I only say this because I'm a chemist. Nail polish remover, if you're talking about acetone, is just as flammable as alcohol, if not more. It also has a high probability of ruining the surface as it dissolves certain plastics and paints. I would suggest taking it back to the place. The best solvent to use is whatever was in the glue in the first place. It could be toluene, methylene chloride, or some type of alcohol. If you want to do it yourself, try isopropyl alcohol that you buy for cosmetic use. It will already be diluted in water and should not hurt the car, but it might not get the glue off either!

you know what els might work, is mineral oil. I use to use it to get tar off of my semi when I use to drive. worked pretty good.
