Why does double clutching keep coming up? Is it a cool saying or what? If and when I want to go as fast as possible, I rev match on shift and let the synchros match the last 200 or so rpm. Double clutching seems like it would take an eternity, I mean, I can't even push my clutch in and out twice in 10 seconds.
On the heel-n-toe note, i need bigger shoes or more flexible ankles...I have been trying to work on that for two months and the only thing I can get out of it is a torn knee cap .

What is heel-& toe? Is that barefoot driving. Rumor is that that can take time off your 1/4. dunno how.

Yeah. If taking time off your 1/4 is secret code for adding time to it. Thats road course crap. Think about it. What the hell are you going to do with your heel and your toe to speed your car up? Push it? You put your heel on the clutch and use your toe to brake for a heel & toe downshift. I recommend learning how to do it in someone elses car because it is a b-atch to get perfected. And double clutching will slow you down too. Why would you want to release the clutch, in neutral, just to apply it again to go to the next gear. If you have synchros and are running a race you do not want to be double clutching. What might speed you up a bit is speed shifting. This is shifting by rev-matching only. You don't apply the clutch at all. Again, try this on someone elses car. Why wreck your rides tranny?

Mxyzptlk - please wear your shoes at all times when inside your car. I fear for your passengers.

Actually I drive better without my shoes on.......

In any case, the heel and toe is a thing that can help you get out of corners with a higher speed..... so dont worry about that
double clutching from what I heard is only usefull on trucks when pulling a big load...... so don't worry about that one neither.....

Instead look into the tire pressures...... I couldn't help you as I don't have any experience in 1/4 mile.....

5 Guardian and PatProtege, where do you guys shift???

Well, that's certainly not going to help your 1/4... WTF would you use your brake for on the strip.

These are road course techniques... there are a couple of good autoX primers out there that explaining exactly what the techniques are, and when they need to be used, and why... 1/4 times in NOT one of them.

Yes you are right, Do not go through the waterbox with street tires!!! I can't say whether the burnout will help, but going through the box is dangerous for others. When you go through with street tires you pick up water in the treads, that water won't get completely dispelled doing a burnout, then when you go down the track you throw water on to the drag strip which can be dangerous to people slowing down from high speeds. The water box is for slicks only.
Stocker.

PS I am just repeating what the drag marshel at my local strip told me.

sorry my firend but it DOES make a difference... just try it... event in your own driveway ( not a bs burnout... SMOKE EM! ) then get out and touch your tires you will se they will be:

1- hot
2- sticky
3- without any gravel
4- more presure inside ( that is the reason you lower the psi before because if you go on the drag strip with 30psi and then heat them youll have like 36 ou 37 psi = no traction )
If you have street tires, there is NO reason to get them hot. Heat will usually REDUCE traction with most street tires. If you have drag radials or (better yet) wrinkle-wall drag slicks, heat will help, but if you're doing burnouts on your street tires you are just abusing them.

The only reason I've ever done burnouts at the strip is if it's not possible to drive around the water box, or if another car has dragged water all over the track. Then, I'll do a quick "chirp" to knock the water off the tires, but that's it.

So who here can actually powershift (which I suspect means without clutching)? I used to be able to do it on an 87 Escort, but that was because the tranny was so fried the clutch didn't really do anything. I loved learning to drive stick without worrying about pushing your foot it.....ahhhhh. Back to the question, can anyone do it on a consistent basis at the strip?

powershifting mean's to shift ( using the clutch ) but without releasing the gas pedal

Hell, I know that... and with as many AutoX questions you've answered around here, I know that you know it... I was just trying to elaborate that it isn't a drag technique... just for the sake of anyone who didn't know it. Just on account of the topic of this thread happens to be 1/4 mile times... and it baffled me that the phrase heel-toe ever appeared here in the first place.

*lol* at all the drag racers destroying their tires and transmission for no good reason. Thanks for the laffs guys keep 'em comin'.

Every single time these guys post a time from the Quebec strip it's always way lower than anyone else has done. So ... I think we to see these cars run at a different strip to get some comparison times.
