Can't wait. But then, that would be an intelligent decision. Oh well.

in all my years of driving in houston...and that is a lot of years folks....in fact I learned to drive in houston.....and even when the limit was 55 before....I have NEVER witnessed any mass of drivers running 55.....the only people you see going 55 are the elderly...some of them anyway....brokedown pickup trucks and other POS cars that were even going 55 when it was 70 for that is as fast as they can travel safely.....

Its all just BS and we all know it. there is no doubt someone getting a kick back from all this crap....some politition for sure.
It doesn't matter to me, Like you said I, and most Texans don't drive the speed limit. So why does it matter what the speed is?

well....its just a matter of not having to even think about johnny law out there....

when the speed limit was raised to 70....I took my radar dectector out of my car all together....as running 70 in quite comfortable for me.....but 55 is a bit absurd......so I dug it back out and put it in my P-5.

yes, 55 mph is rather rediculous, especially in Houston! I can't beleive that even got passed.

Its amazing how much the law enforcement doesnt care about our safety. It seems, the drop to 55mph was also pushed so they could get some more money out of the commuters. The police over here in NB are just the same way, I saw them pull over an old couple once, made them get out of their car, checked them, and 3 other cops showed up, it turned into a 30 min deal, and I am not even sure if the old couple did anything wrong. I have had my fair share of cops in this town "try" to pull me over, I just don't stop for these small town ******** anymore.

The best way to head off the speed limit decrease is to let your elected representatives know about your opinion. The EPA compliance plan for Dallas and Houston will be under review soon anyway because a Texas district court struck down a key provision of the plan (an incentive program to get construction companies to buy new heavy equipment and to give people rebates for buying low-emissions vehicles). Here's what I recommend:

1) Write your local representatives in the House and Senate and tell them to stop caving in to the electric utilities, petrochemical companies and cement manufacturers. The number one, two and three sources of pollution in the state (other than vehicles) are lignite coal fired power plants in East Texas, oil refineries near Houston, and cement plants near Dallas. Tell them to regulate the "grandfathered" plants rather than trying to regulate the safe and reasonable behavior of ordinary Texans. All that lowering the speed limit is going to do is subsidize law enforcement, and everyone knows that. Tell them we want REAL reform.

2) Vote for Tony Sanchez for governer Rick Perry's veto pen is for sale to the highest bidder, and he will veto any plan that doesn't make his big campaign contributors (see above) happy. Let's take the governership out of the hands of big business and give it back to the people.

Sorry for bringing up politics in a car-related forum, but I have strong opinions on this topic. YMMV

(Now donning flameproof Nomex suit)

Can't say I really trust Sanchez but I will say he is better than dubyah's lackey. I agree with you about regulating industry. They are by far the worst polluters. I also want to see a tax on high emmisions vehicles (Suburbans and such) and low fuel economy vehicles (same such stuff, just get em twice). I see way too many big trucks and SUV's driving around here with only 1 person inside. Even better is that they should make any vehicle over 10 years old either A) upgrade their emissions system or B) get off the damn road.

the only problem with this...is then EVERY classic car that everyone has would be subjected to these rules....not exactly possible....could you see the guy with the 1930 model A trying to make it meet TODAYS emmisions standards? its just not as simple as a blanket law covering all cars that are 10 years old or older....

HOWEVER>....just making them meet the standards of the year that they were produced would help.
