winding up whistling noise

when im driving without any music on or the windows open, i get to hear a winding up whistling noise start at and around 3000 RPM
i had plenty of chances to hear this during the past few months, but it just atarted a week back

im sure my car has no FI, because doing oil changes and regular maintence im constantly looking at my motor, and i would have noticed this whistling sooner. plus i know what a turbo looks like and most of the attachments, and i know what a supercharger looks like and some of its attachments...
and i know i got a plain *** motor

now im asking here because im very weary of all the civicers and ricers answers to this problem on a honda-tech forum.

i own a 1993 honda prelude 5sp
if it helps out any to the problem

Everything stock under the hood? Intake? Have you been in any other Preludes -- do they make the same noise?

In alot of cases that noise is an open filter, like the cone style after market intakes come with. Not being in a box you can hear it suck.It gets a little louder when dirty.

i dont know, it couldnt be dirty, i just checked it a week ago, an its still a white filter.
it might be the intake. i guess.

it might haveto do something with the weather... its been getting colder here..
and i noticed it only happens when the engine is warmed up... i usually start my car, wait untill one bar appears in the temp section and then i go.. .but when its half way or 2 bars, then the whistleing after 2800 to 3200 rpm occurs... its pretty noticable in 4th gear too

thank you for the replys so far
i guess i gatta go with hte intake making the noise

If its not an aftermarket intake you wont be able to hear it because of the air box. I will have to think a little on this, maybe i can come up with something else to help you.

does the a/c in this car work ???

if so are you running it while getting this noise ???

if so try switching off the a/c for a moment and listen....if it stops, your whistle is the a/c clutch, and that sound is normal...some cars it's more noticeable than others

actually the a/c works incredably well... i just never really use it.
yes i am running it with the noise. but it seems to be doing no harm (yet, if it is a early sign of something bad)

on honda-prelude.com
in the forums, i have posted the same thing... i havn't really gotten too many answers, just 1.. although i did forget to mention my air filter is still very new and white.
and would denounce the question of creditability
im suprised nothing came up yet.

well, i am going to keep checking my engine... hopefully i can get a sound wav in so you guys can hear it
it'll probably help out alot more then words from me

thanks

Ground loop /alternator problem!

IF you disconnect your speakers does it go away. (even with the sterio turned off you might still hear it)

i agree with zero... it's probably a Ground loop fault. try to pinpoint the sound and see if it is coming from the engine bay or the SPEAKERS!

do you have an aftermarket amp? if so, are your power wires run on the same side as your RCA cables? if the stereo is stock, pull your speakers and check the wires for frays, brittleness.
