Rumor for 2003 Protege5/MP3

Has anyone else been hearing the rumor that the 2003 Models of 5/MP3 Will be more along the lines of 170hp with a turbo??? I've been seing this pop up here and their on different forums. I would like to see them bring the FSZE over upgrade internals so you can put a decent amount of boost on. Man would these cars be hot!

I haven't heard any specific HP numbers, but there have been rumors from Mazda engineers that the Protege will get a turbo. However, with time running out on the Protege chassis (it will be based on the Focus chassis supposedly in 2004), it may be difficult to justify the cost to the corporate bean counters. Keep your fingers crossed.

I don't know what Mazda's thinking, but it would be much cheaper to bring FS-ZE to North America-it's been around for a while and it's definetely cheaper to make it conform to ULEV, than develop turbo and make it conform to ULEV standards.
I'd rather drive 170 hp NA car than 170 hp turbo, more practical for FWD without LSD in Toronto winter slush
Another question-why the hell they dropped BP? Increase displacement to 2 liters, put some agressive cams in it and it would push out 150-160 at the crank. What about variable valve timing, damn it? And that engine IS faster because of different power curve even though it has less low end torgue.
I can feel negative influence of blue oval here. The evil empire of Ford.

A 1990 around $1500 to $3000 a 1994 $2800 to $5000. The ones for $5000 better be in dam good shape. I've seen paople asking for more. I had a 91 DX with a 1.8 SOHC 16V and i got $1600 for it as a trade in.

Unhappy turbo p5

I sent an email to overboost which had pics of the turbo P5 and I got a reply. They said that it was just a project car and that mazda isn't comming out with a turbo.

I'd rather have the turbo engine than the FS-ZE. It would be much easier to modify for more power.

Also, you dont need to increase displacement on a BP to get power. 160 crank hp is easily doable with cams, intake, exhaust, and header. And 180 is doable with those mods, a set of cam gears, plus a computer, and solid lifters....and thats at 9000 rpm, which the bottom end is perfectly good for.

Back in like 94 or so...two guys out of Canada built 200whp normally aspirated BP engines for use in rally racing. If someone actually puts some time, and effort into it, the BP is a scary NA motor.
Sorry to have to ask but what does BP stand for? I'm a little behind with the acronyms.

Hey Mad323,
How much to ship to the US. Never mind the driver sits on the wrong side, but then that might be fun untill I have to pay a toll or use a drive through. Shifting with the left hand isn't that bad. but if i was going to ship a right hand drive car to the US I'd get the Ford Escort Cosworth.

Just alittle info just because the JDM engine is rightside driver doesnt mean your car has to be. The most common swaps with imports IS a jdm swap and you dont have to switch. It would be ALOT more work to make your car a right hand driver then just to bolt the engine in. Hehe

True but if the is coming from some where like New Zealand or Australia (I've been told that left hand drive cae are illegal there, not sure of NZ) then the driver sits on the wrong side. Now I've driving right hand drive cars in the UK and it's not hard to do. But would you want it over here as you're every day car. Maybe if it's a good one. TVR, Westfield, Lotus, Ford Cosworth and Maybe a 68 Mini Cooper S.
Wish we could get better cars in the US.

If you look closely at the picture of the FS-ZE engine on Corksport's website, you'll notice that some of the fuel system components are on the drivers side where ours are on the passenger side. Things like this cound cause problems if they effected the wiring harness of plumbing enough. Fortunately, on the FS-ZE engine in our cars they don't. At least two Protege owners already have this swap done.
