So if they did make the engine internally stronger , you must be able to increase the boost and get more then 40 Hp out of the turbo then.

Doesnt the torque seem a little low also??

i was just told that they might not be able to come out with the turbo here in the states because of a "0 tolerance" on emissions here in 2003...hmmm......has anybody heard this?

Does anyone think it may be possible to put the turbo that will be on the new protege, and put it on our exising 2.0L Protege/P5s?

170 horsepower and a T-25 have not got me excited about this car unfortunately. No upgraded lower compression pistons, AWD,220 horsepower or 6 speed. Mazda are suggesting a MSRP of less then $25,000. It better be less than $20,000! Why would I buy this front wheel drive underpowered car that has little tuning potential? Subaru or Mitsubishi will get my business next year with either the STI or the EVO for about $4000 more. What will that buy? 6 speed, AWD, Brembo brakes,260+ horsepower,8000 redline, upgraded motor with VVT and bigger turbocharger with a better intercooler and water sprayer with the STI. Evo 7 may be packing even more grunt. The Dodge Neon SR-T is the Mazdaspeed Protege's competition. Lets see, under $20,000, over 200 horsepower, 148 mph top speed(claimed) upgraded suspension and brakes, front mount intercooler and 2.4 liters of displacement. Yes its ugly, yes the interior is hideous, yes I am dubious about the build quality and reliabilty of a Neon. I was hoping for a little more out of this Mazdaspeed Protege, not just a MP3 with a Callaway T-25 turbo kit slapped on it. Hopefully Mazda will develop some more exciting products in the future in Japan and import them here( Mazda 6 AWD, twin turbo). The current P5 is available right now in Japan with AWD and a 170 hp N/A motor? I was hoping that Mazda would turbocharge the new 2.3 liter motor and strengthen it for that application. My BPT motor from 1990 is more sophisticated and durable then the current offerings from Mazda. I will definately test drive a Protege when its released, and I wouldn't be surprised if we develop some go fast goodies for it. I hope its at least a good drive.

I dont believe that Mitsu. is bringing over the evo 7. If they did it would suck, it would be WAY under powered due to emission controls etc. Also, say goodbye to the OEM FMIC. Im not sure why but US does not allow a FMIC to be on factory cars. So you are looking at an AWD car thats heavy as ****, Im gonna take a wild guess and say 1 precat and 2 reg. cats. But Mistu. bringing over the EVO 7 is a myth from what Ive heard but I havent been reading about it much recently. If you are looking for AWD go with a WRX.

In my opinion there is no need for a 6 speed tranny for a 4 banger. Just not enough UMPH. My friend who owns a RSX type S says that he could do w/o a 6 speed. Granite a 6 speed looks awesome and its fun to say you have one but come on, is it neccesary? (yeah I know I cant spell)

I would rather have a rear wheel drive car anway. A lot less can go wrong with it and *IF* im correct you dont lose as much HP from the flywheel to the wheels (Im probably wrong here, just an observation). I really really really really really really really really wish Mazda would dump the P5 on the Miata Chassie, we could do SOOO much more with our cars. Can you say 20B?!?

anyway, just my 2 cents.

?? Not the same Evo 7 that is famed out East. It's exactly as TrexPro5 said. All the emissions laws required them to cut many, many mods out of it. I think they said it was going to come in around 210.

then what about the STi Version of the WRX that will have around 270 hp, so the Evo must produce the same to compeate.

I think a special Evo 7 is coming out like the STI WRX.

We will just have to wait.

For 26k Wrx Sti with 270 Hp 6 manual and all other goodies will kill everything else.

Hey Guys, both the STI and EVO 7 will be here in the states early next year. Both will have over 260 horsepower and offer fantastic handling and braking. The Japanese market cars can accelerate to 100 mph in 11 seconds and do over 145 MPH. I don't think for $4000 less I would consider the 170 horsepower FWD Protege.
