The point of having a simliar grill is for brand identity, a common styling/styling element theme. Chevy tried it with the horizontal chrome bar with the logo in it. Ford does that sort of Audi/VW grill treatment. And Dodge has their crosshair grill. Sometimes the brand identity can go badly and hurt the styling of a company's cars.
If they are going to implement an identity, the company better know how to change it to fit the car/market. If you look at Mazda, they generally have the same grills...minus the Miata. That's the way a person at quick glance can tell what company the car is.
Heavy glass...you have a point there: quietness, that would be part of the porker equation.
