Which Turbo?

Which Turbo?
Sorry for having to start a new thread! I have a question. Which turbo do you guys recommend, the Flyin Protege (Flyin Miata) trubo, or the Mazda one. The Mazda claims to push 4-5 psi of boost, while the Flyin Miata has 6 psi. The Mazda one, however, has 2 stage's while the Flyin Miata currently has one stage. Does this make a difference? Also, the Mazda one is about $1,000 cheaper, and being that it is sold by Mazda, for Mazda's will the warrenty still work for this? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I'm getting the right kit, before I spend $3-4,000 on a turbo!! Thanks!!

what do you mean by the "mazda one" the one from the MSP?? if so it pushes 6.9psi. but from my knowledge it will not be forsale as a kit. also check out http://www.spool-turbo.com/ There are also a few more kits close to production.

i've had this discussion warrenty wise with a couple guys at mazda on different occasions....however every time i ask if mazda will still honor the warrenty engine wise if i put a turbo on it, i get the same response...hysterical laughter!

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. Yeah, I checked out the spool site and it was the same exact kits for sale!? I dunno why? Anyways, since it claimed to be an official "OEM Mazda" site, I figured that they might put up some kind of warrenty. I'm guessing not though. Well, I also hear that another company is starting to make a kit for the proteges, primarily the P5, but I'm sure it'll fit the other 3rd gens. I forget the website, but I know there's a thread about it in the other site entitled "new turbo kit" or something like that. As soon as I can get the link I'll post it.

Ok guys, another dumb question. Does the stage 2 spoolin kit come with an ic or do you have to buy the stage 3 kit along with the stage 2? I've seriously looked around and I haven't gotten a straight answer and my eyes are hurting from the damn computer screen. Please help!!

Checked things out
I was looking at the Flyin Miata turbo set-up compaed to the "Mazda" turbo set-up you are talking about. It is true that the "mazda" set-up is a good 1 grand cheeper than the flyin miata turbo kit, but look at what you get with each kit.
"Mazda" Kit
Race fabricated manifold
High speed balanced Garrett turbo
Stainless steel braided oil lines with anodized fittings
Turbonetics external wastegate
Installation guide and support
Pre gapped turbo spark plugs
Healthy 2.5 inch race downpipe
Fuel Management Unit
Now, look at what the Flyin Miata turbo offers.
Garrett T3 water-cooled turbo with integral wastegate
front mounted air/air intercooler
recirculating blow-off valve (FM aluminum sequential blow-off available as an upgrade)
cast iron manifold
black steel intercooler pipes
colormatched silicone hose connectors
FM boost gauge with white face
BEGI rising rate fuel pressure regulator
auxiliary fuel pump
FM O2 signal modifier
all hoses, clamps, bolts, nuts, fittings etc required for installation
clear instructions
NOW, to tell you the truth, I am intesrted in some turbo kits myself, and it probably wouldn't be a bad investment down the line. However, I don't know what all of that means. As far as I know, you will probably need to add an intercooler to the Mazda version, which is an additional 900 dollars. Add that in, and you're around the same price. Some of the experts could probably help you MUCH better than i can, but I figured I could break it down a little bit for you... have everything on one page. What I do know is that I see a kid on cardomain.com has the flyinmiata version, and when I asked him about it, he said it was the best buy. That's just his opinion though. I'll see if I can find his car for ya, and put a link up. Untill then...
Catch you on the flip side,

Thanks Pepi, yeah the spoolin turbo kit says nothing about having an IC on the stage 1 and 2 kits. I just figured all turbo kits had one of these. I know of two guys on cardomain that have a turbo kit, both of which are the Flyin Miata kit. One of them specifically names it, while the other calls it a Bell Engineering kit (BEGI). BEGI actually made the kit and distributed it through Flyin Miata. I know that there is another kit due out this summer, so I'm waiting on that one. As far as I know, I can't seem to find anyone with the Spoolin Kit, everyone seems to have the FM kit. One other person has the Hi Boost kit, but everyone, including myself, are a little skeptical.

You really have 3 choices for production kits: (BTW Spoolin has been taking orders from Mazda Dealerships across the US)
1) FM / BEGI Kit
- great company, experienced and extremely respected in the MIATA world
- great customer service!
- Good choice of components, good workmanship
- Primarily use their own branded components
- SIDE FRONT Mount Intercooler, efficient, but not as aggressive as a Front Mount Intercooler (FMIC)
- Very Stock looking (good or bad; depends on your preferance)
- Uses an FMU (pressure based device to regulate the added fuel)
- CAST LOG manifold; reliable easier to produce
2) Spool
- newer company in the Mazda world (relatively)
- grear customer service
- good choice of components, can cater to some of the name brands; HKS, Greddy, Garret, TIAL
- STAGED kits, start with Stage 1 or 2, then add stage 3 for FMIC; great for people that don't have all the cash right away
- more of a "showy" style of turbo kit
- stage 2 manifold, quicker spool up, very efficient, very "bling"
- Uses an FMU (pressure based device to regulate the added fuel)
- Good price for the overall value
3) Hiboost
- extremely new to the world of Protege (1 month)
- customer service is to be determined, but so far they are very responsive and enthusiastic to inform and help
- good choice of components, IHI turbo
- highest published HP and Torque gains to date
- One kit, one price (highest price kit on the market so far; but price does reflect the product value)
- FMIC included
- more of a "showy" style kit
- First Kit to use an ECU to manage fuel, piggy back Haltech F10
As you can see they are all great companies. I have been looking at turbos for easily a year. I have talked to each of these companies at length and it has always made my choice that much more difficult. I was looking at the Spool kit, but they have a bit of a backorder situation (2-3 month wait; call I could be wrong).
I am leaning more towards the HIBOOST kit, mainly because of the ECU based fuel system. I have yet to decide as I am concerned about my warranty and my INSURANCE (i hate the insurance companies)
Hope this helps, if you have more questions....I can try to help.

Thanks yp5!! That helps alot! Yeah, I'm battling a situatioin with warrenty issues myself. The thing is my dad has a coworker who actually build drag cars and he told my dad that his friend put in a bolt on turbo kit and his engine blew. I was thinking that that was his fault and the turbo kit should've been fairly safe. I'm trying to figure out how to convince my dad that it won't happen with my car!! Anybody have any suggestions. As for turbo kits, I'm bouncing around between the FM and the Spoolin. I like the idea of having an F10, but the Hiboost kit is still really new.

mrpopnfresh, HIBOOST is located out of California (I believe) give them a call directly.....if you do me a favor tell them Jason from Toronto sent you..LOL.
agreed though......Hiboost is new, but it seems quite promising. If they located out of Cali...you would have much easier access to support from them.
